Mustard of doom
Hi,
2 things
I know that the yellow mustard under my oil cap is from making short journeys all the time, but now that I have stopped that, will it eventually go away? Or do I have to clean the whole engine out or something.
Secondly, I have just driven to my aunties and the engine nearly blew up i.e. there was steam coming from the engine (i have checked everything and i was very lucky it is okay). When i checked the coolant it was bone dry, isnt there a light that should come on for this??
Anyway:
here's a pic of my beast....

By going off my polo i had mustard as you call it around the oil filler cap due to only using for short runs went for a good long blast and started using it for a longer period and eventually went... get the coolant toped up asap lucky it hasnt damaged anything.. surely the temp guage would of gone sky high????

Re: Mustard of doom
if its doing that, i'd say ur head gasket gone or goin, cus th mustard is caused by water mixing with the oil
also to stop the mustard u need regular oil changes with a vauxhall

Re: Mustard of doom
thanks for the replies.
oh yeah the temp gauge did. sorry stupid mistake there lol.
After filling up the coolant today, i checked it to make sure there is no leaks, and the tub is only around 1/5 full? is it right that the rest of it will be in the engine?
@dancorsab91: cheers gave it a good wash just after and blackened tyres with some turtle wax stuff.
ps. anyone know where i can get some cheap black lexus lights?

Re: Mustard of doom
get a new filler cap from halfords or vauxhall, there really poo seals on vauxhalls, and if your losing water, itl most likly be head gasket, there was someone else on here and the exact same thing happnd, and dont get lexus lights there horrible get some standard tinted lights or do them yourself

Yeah i shall go down tomorrow. See the thing is, i dont know if im losing water or if its because the water is in the engine. Im not sure. Though, if the mustard and loss of water are both typical of a head gasket gone then its prob that.
How much are head gaskets to be replaced?
p.s do you think so? my back light is cracked so i want some knew lights and dont know if to get standard or lexus lights.

Re: Mustard of doom
Just looked at the car, mustard is under both the oil cap and coolant tank cap? does this confirm a screwed up head gasket?
I cant even the the maximum markers on the coolant tank becuase the inside of it is so filthy...ill post a pic in an hour or so.
p.s. I only bought this car 2 month ago so it looks as though the previous owners didnt take good care of the poor thing
just really confused about all this so replies are greatly appreciated

not so much power. Just looked at the collant and its not even blue or whatever, its brown and full of crap. Why is it with cars, that you fix one thing to find yet another problem

Re: Mustard of doom
UPDATE: it has just over heated again so I got out to check the coolant (it did squirt a bit) and it was full. Also water was leaking out of the radiator which was probably due to the pressure that had built up. Been told not to drive it until the head gasket is fixed.
On the good side though, heres my car after a lil clean up
