My 1st post!!
I have a '99 1.2 16v, with 98k on clock.
Car was serviced the day after I bought it 4 months ago ( inc. new filter and oil change). At that time I also had a new oil pressure switch fitted as the light was flickering at low revs.
Up to 10 days ago everything was fine then the oil pressure light started flickering again and is now on permanently at under 1500 revs. The engine has also got a bit noisier.I tried another oil pressure switch but this didn't help at all.
After reading lots of posts on the web and reading Haynes, I think it may be the Oil Pressure Relief Valve in the oil pump which is sticking.
In the next week or so I am going to change the filter and oil, to see if this helps. Before I change the oil would it be advisable to use e.g. Wynns Engine Flush to try to rectify the fault on the Relief Valve -to clear the gunge which prevents it opening or closing properly.
I have no idea of the service history of the car, and don't want the engine flush to dislodge 10 years of grime as this could knacker the engine completely.
I know the final decision is mine, but I would be grateful to hear of anyone else's experiences with this.

Re: rattling noise
I wouldnt recomend the engine flush, like you say since it hasnt been used since the engine was new then it could drag up bits of crap from the bottom of the sump and clog your oil galleries. Just try the oil and filter change 1st, it could be doing with a change.
If this doesnt work maybe someone else could help you sort out the light,

Re: rattling noise
Just thought I would now update this post.
Decided to go with the engine flush, but when I drained the oil it looked fairly clean.
Changed the oil & oil filter - I used Castrol GTX 15W40. I also changed the oil pressure switch for a new one at the same time. Now the engine sounds a bit quieter - now sounds more like a diesel rather than a noisy diesel as before.
The oil light is still coming on, but only at tickover (800revs) and only when the engine is warm.
This morning I changed the plugs for a new set. A retired mechanic I know had a look at the old plugs and told me that their condition indicated a healthy engine!
I have had an estimate of £290 for fitting a new timing chain and sprockets, which may be the cause of the rattling noise, but now waiting for the Lottery to provide the funds.
