Corsa B Not Starting

Post by brenwhel »

Hello All,

I have a problem with my Corsa B Year 1994 engine C14 NZ.

When I try to start her up I just get the single click from the solenoid and nothing else.
I have tried to jump start her and get the same result ( a click ) with a good strong diesel battery as backup ?
I had already put a multimeter across the battery and I don't think the problem lies there.

I suspect the starter motor, but have tried rocking here in 3rd without result and have tried bump starting her, again no joy?

Have not yet tried the hammer job directly on starter with a piece of wood but wondering if anyone has any ideas?

As with most folk these days, money is too tight to mention for a visit to the garage, so any help much appreciated?

Cheers

Sounds like the starter is naff, but it could just be the solenoid. Try bridging the bolts/wires on the starter motor and see if the engine turns ok. It is weird that the car would not start with a bump though. Might be other problems with the car, like the crankshaft sensor maybe, but best to sort out the starter first, then go on from there.

Hi I've got perhaps the same problem: 98 Corsa-B 1.5TD won't start.
  • Battery is ok, control panel comes on.
  • Hear the click from the solenoid when try to start. But that's all you hear it is dead silent otherwise.
  • I had trouble starting in the past couple of weeks with increasing frequency.
All these made me think that it is the "starter motor". Perhaps the "carbon brushes" of the motor is worn away.
I know all the theory but... I don't know how to do this in practice.(n00b is the word I guess)
I would appreciate somebody can instruct me how to do this.

I would like to start learning the practice of it. (I'm an electronics engineer)

All the best.

Take the starter motor off, place on a bench, and remove the end cap from the casing. You should now see the brushes, if they are ok, then the motor is knackered. I have done many of these in the past, but it is so long ago and my memory ain't what it used to be. Just look carefully around the motor, and undo what is the obvious to get inside the casing. You will have to take the wiring off, disconnect the solenoid and undo the through bolts as well.
If you have another solenoid lying about, stick it on to the motor, just in case it is the solenoid that is duff.
