URGENT Help Please!

Post by Mathroo »

Hi People,

I need your help, I have seen the previous posts about this, but cannot make any sense of them. So please lay ya responses in a language I can understand :D Diagrams would be helpful. I know nothing about cars except how to drive them and change basic bits, like mirrors, plugs etc

I recently bought a 1997 Corsa Merit and the Wind Screen Washers aren't working. I pull the leaver and the wipers do their thing but no water coming from the tank. I cannot hear any pumps going. So am thinking it's the pump that has gone.

I've noticed that people have mentioned it could be a fuse, but have also seen that on these models the fuse for the washer pump is the same for the wipers, and as the wipers work i'm guessing the fuse is good. I do not have a volt metre to test anything as wouldn't even know where to begin. could it be the tank is clogged up?

Can anyone please tell me how I can do fault finding. How do I remove and check/replace the washer tank and pump etc (without having to remove the wheel, as others have suggested).

Sorry for sounding like a thick git. Your help would be much appreciated.

thanks.

first things first ,you dont have to remove any of the wheels to do anything to the washer pump as its under the bonnet on the passenger side under the windscreen . if when you pull the washer stalk you are getting no noise from the washer pump then it sounds like the pump is knackered and just needs changing .if you look at the side of the water bottle you will see a plastic 10mm nut which holds the bottle in just remove that and pull the bottle towards the centre of the car you can then get at the pump ,just pull it out and get another from the scrappys if when you take the pump out no water comes out then the black rubber seal that holds the pump in is also a filter just pull it out and clean under running water .its all very simple to do

I managed to have a looksee under the bonnet today. Think it's defo the pump that has had it.. I didn't have the right tools to get at the bolt holding the water tank inplace. However the pump on my car (not sure if on all of em, cos thought they were underneath the tank) is on the side. I checked the fuse and that wasn't it. put direct power from the battery to the pump, got the sparks when rubbed wires on it and got nothing.. Going to have a nosey online for a replacement.

thanks for your help.

My washer pump wasn't making any sound which suggested it wasn't working because of being clogged up, I checked it with a voltmetre and it was fine so i removed it and opened the pump up with a flat head screwdriver. Inside was a bit rusty which prevented the motor from spinning so I oiled it up and put it back together and it was good as new didn't need to buy one.

I was looking at your problem and i have something similar.
my pump wasn't working so i removed it and checked it by connecting to a spare 12v battery it was dead.
i got a replacement and checked on the spare battery it worked fine. After installing it in the car it won't function.
i checked the power to it with my multimeter and it reads 0 v then when you operate the stalk it goes to 11.8v for about 1 sec before dropping to 0.2v.

Does anyone know if this is a relay issue or something else like an electrical short.
