Thermostat opening temp

Post by Paul666 »

Hey folks could really do with a bit of advice before i go mad lol. Right problem is my coolant temp on my 1.4 corsa capital 8 v 98 model! goes right up to 100c before the thermostat opens up and allows coolant to flow into radiator checked with haynes and according to that it should start to open at 88 and be fully open at 106c. When am driving along temp sits between 96 to 98c had waterpump done recently and fan works fine. Was thinking thermostat could be faulty but i know it involves taking timing belt etc off so was hoping some 1 here could tell me sumat diff lol. Also seem to be geting slight engine detonation when i feather the accelarator was putting that down to heat build up in cylinder block as it only happens when engine is hot! Am i being paranoid please help;-) and thanx in advance..

My engine was overheating after I changed the waterpump, turned out to be air in the cooling system. Once I took the expansion tank cap off and started the engine (cold) to bleed it, I could see bubbles coming up to the surface and it calmed down after that.

If you think your thermostat is sticking shut, there's a pipe that goes from the thermostat housing behind the camshaft sprocket into the top left of the radiator. When the engine has been running check to see if that pipe is warm as if it's not then the coolant isn't getting to the radiator.

It's a nightmare changing the thermostat though, why anyone would decide to put it in such a stupid place is beyond me

Thanks spartacus tell me bout it for such a small thing it turns into a major job lol. The hose coming frm stat housing into top of rad does get warm not to the temp hits 100c tho when it hits that temp you can feel the heat goin in2 rad. Just thinking it should open earlier?
