burning oil?

My mate has a corsa 1.0 12v, done about 50k. The engine light came on not long after buying the car, and he was told that this was the egr valve. since then its started getting through a couple of litres of oil a week, and smelling of burning. diagnosis anyone?

does it blue smoke when you rev it or anything like leaks on your drive, oil on the engine at all around the rocker cover check for leaks, the 1.0 engines arnt the best to be fair worst cause scenario is piston rings and or wanting a engine replacement but check for the obvious first and if you are mechanicaly knowledged run a compression test on the cyclinders to see if one of them is down on compression
