Is this the ICV?

Post by kedw200 »

A while ago (before my car had a rev counter) I noticed that when warm (and often on damp days?) the car would judder when I put the clutch down at junctions. I now have a rev counter and when taking the car for a drive last night- which was damp- I realised the reason for the judder.

Basically, when the clutch is pressed, instead of dropping to about 800-900RPM for normal idle, the revs drop as low as about 500 for 2/3 seconds, then slowly rise to the normal idle speed. Pulled up in a car park and revved the engine in neutral, the revs drop to about 700 (judder) then rise to idle.

From what I've read, I believe this could be the Idle Control Valve. I've heard about cleaning but wondered, how much is a new one? If they're cheap I might just pop a new one in, if not I'll just clean it (if it's the problem!).

When the car is started from warm a similar thing happens as well, instead of shooting up to idle when the engine starts, the revs go upto 500 then slowly upto idle. that's if I don't give it a rev to 2000 to start it on it's way.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like the ICV as its happening just as the car idles after revving. but it could just need a good service.. plugs/filters/oil etc. If you let me know what engine you have i might be able to give you a rough price.

Would diagnostics give me any decent idea of a problem? I can get it connected to a machine for nothing :)

When all the other lights (oil, battery, etc) do, it comes on, but goes out soon as the engine's started. Thought that was normal?
