Corsa 1.0 12v - Rattly Engine!!

Post by Simmo500 »

Hi,

I'm new to the forum to apologies for any mistakes lol.
I have a 98 1.0 12v Corsa B. I am aware that these are naturally noisy engines however mine makes a noticeable rattling noise. It doesn't sound particularly unhealthy but it is one of those noises that if you can get rid of it, it would be nice! Just wondering if there's anything I can do to reduce any noise and generally
Quieten the engine a little bit? Also, when bringing up my
Clutch in 1st I get a strange kind of 'clunking' noise
From the right side of the wing. Any help would be much appreciated! :)

Thanks!

Hello :)

I also have this engine- the rattle could be the timing chain? I've heard mixed reviews about getting it changed- some say do it, others say it only makes a difference for a few hundred miles :S Is the rattle all the time? Cause on mine it only seems to happen when it gets warm (after say, half hour's drive?), so I've kinda left it, aha. Plus it doesn't really sound mega bad...

You could try servicing? It's always a good way to get the engine to run that bit smoother, I know I did that on mine :)

as for the clutch, noooo idea! Sorry!

Yeah it seems to be when I first start up, especially on a cold morning but it's just a sort of ticky noise - it doesn't really go when ive been driving a while either, but most of the rattling goes on in 1st & 2nd. Yeah it does louden a little when i rev it too! Inside the car it isn't really bad at all but if I have the window down for instance it's quite noticable! So god knows what it sounds in a tunnel lol! So what would be the best/ easiest thing to start with?

Thanks for your replys! :-)

change the tappets IMO as thats really a comment fault eg: last owner didnt really service it etc etc
tappets increase to work dry hence the noise due to lack of oil in the tappets positions under the cam.
maybe try tightening the tappet tensioners if all ready tight and not loose change them.
my best Oppinion would be to change the tappets and buy new only issue with that its gonna be costly,

or just goto a garage and say hi fella. can you just tell me if this noise is the tappets and how much would you charge.

as i dont want you thinking im sending you in the wrong direction to waste s**t loads of mulla.....
so that way a pro can tell you what is what and confirm what im saying ;)

i am NOT a mechanic but have worked on all my cars myself and faults have always been redeemed ;)
Hope my advice helps you.,....

That's great mate thank you. I'll nip to a mechanic who I'm quite friendly with and see if he can confirm it! Thanks for your help and I will update when I have spoken to him!

Cheers!!

i would say this is probably the timing chain thats gone slack but like krazy said get a mechanics opinion.

i had the same problem on mine since i bought it but other week it got quite bad especially when idling at lights etc.

i bought a timing chain kit and fitted it on driveway and it seems fine now to be honest so maybe youve got the same problem. it was the hydraulic tensioner on it that had gone, allowing the chain to go slack

only thing i would say bout doin the chain is its a bit of a pain to take everything off to get to it.
