Corsa B Juddering from cold start

Post by Lacey_Corsa »

Bit of a weird one here.....

ok, its a 1998 corsa b 1.2 8v. its had a full service including spark plugs, oil, engine flush etc. New airflow meter not long back. New headgasket, thermostat and cambelt last week also

the car struggles to fire up first thing in a morning or when left a while, especially more when theres moisture around ive found (rain overnight etc). Struggling to an extent i have flattened the battery and had to jump start it, which still took some effort to actually fire up still.

When eventually fired up, the revs try to drop to the normal 800-1000, the car "spits" a little and the revs increase slightly to compensate. It can do this for around 20 mins or so just sat with the engine on idle. If i rev the car after starting up its "spits" up through the revs and judders BADLY if im actually driving. If i rev it too much (and were talking accelerator down half way tops only) it can splutter and cut out completely and im back to sqaure one.....bad news!

The thing that makes this weird is that MOST of the time, after driving it for 20mins or so, it starts to behave and not judder and splutter anymore....only just lately i cant drive up any big hills without having to go right down to first and use the clutch only as the engine starts to judder again when i put the gas on

its like the petrol is struggling to get through and its causing bad juddering... i don't know!

i am proper stumped. just want to know if anyone else has this problem and how....if it can....be sorted??

I have a 1.4 8v and had a similar problem to you but not quite so severe, mine struggled to start but would start on its own, and the juddering sorts its self out after 15 - 20 mins, on my way to work one morning it happened again, so i opened the bonnet and found that one of the HT leads was sparking against the metal tube that the spark plugs fit in, i changed the HT leads and it runs even better than it did before.

Hope This Helps, Mike

yes! now you come to mention it, someone said there was a spark identical to what you had on those leads some time ago when we were jump starting it.

Ive had a look on ebay and can get a double silicone set for the 1.2 for about 22 quid

there are some enhanced one but they are for the 1.4 apparently....any diffrence or is it safe to have the 1.2 designed ones?

i really hope thats all it is....i owe you big time robbo! Savior!! 8)

Not too sure Tbh, i just went to halfords and got a set nothing special i dont think, id just stick to the ones made for the 1.2, i payed about £25 i think for mine but needed to be fixed quick so wasnt bothered about the price.

This had been happening to me for ages and i had no clue as to what it was, its been running great so far, touch wood :P

Hope you get it sorted :)

Ive had a look on halfords website for them and cant find them on there.....i can always ask in store or get them on ebay for the same price really no worries!

are they easy to change like just pull the old ones out and push the new ones into place
or do they need sealing and screwing to the ideal frequency and stuff like that?

cant wait to get it finally sorted and will report back when they are replaced also

I just asked in store for a set for a 1.4 97 corsa and they got me a set :)

Just change one lead at a time because of the ignition patern and all they are, are just a push fit onto the coil pack (black thing on the right of the engine) and onto the spark plug its self :)

Good Luck :D
