AnyMOT guys on? re rust chasis box section

Post by Paul666 »

Took car to get sum welding done today chasis box section at least thats what i think its called its the bits that cme off chasis legs and xtend down 2 sill and directly behind front wheel arch plz correct me if im wrng it wud explain somethings haha! Anyway mechanhc startd welding and said it cudnt be done as the torch was blowing straight through as its badly rotten! He said its either goina be a big job to put right or i cud fibreglass it then bodyfill to get rid of any imperfections and then underseal. Me thinking this is a structural point (chasis box sec) thought that would be a big no no! But he said as lomg as mot tester cnt put screwdriver through it will pass! Is there any truth in this? And am i rite in thinkin its a structural point? Cheerz guys!

well yea they are structural points the chassis members, but at the end of the day its down to you, can weld it up but it might take a bit of doing or fibreglass it and paint it over, then MOT it, then sell it on and look out for another corsa.

Before i fibreglass this box section just wondring if anyone has had same problem! Heard it is a weak point in the corsa b chassis and if so did they get it welded up was it expensive? And also if anyone has fibreglassed this bit of a corsa! Cars to good to get rid only got 60k on it and i was wanna start lowering it etc. So wud rather keep just depends how much welding would be. Cheers.

its better to just weld it up, just tell him to use a piece of metal, to weld over the hole. its not a big job, just a boring and awkward job working/welding under a car.

It's a longer job dealing with fiberglass and filler, compared to welding a new panel on, the fact the guy you went to to do the job suggested fibreglassing the whole end of your section just does not sound proffesional, and is not thinkin bout the safety of his customer, end of the day its your choice, but welding is much recommended. Hope helps mate.

Went to a accident repair body shop today and iv been qouted 60quid for both sides 2hr work guy said! So its looking good for my corsa just hope he aint like other dude and says its goina b a big job. Dude seemed to knw what he was talking bout and also said the carpets will have to get lifted so should be an entire new sectiom i think as opposed to a plate at bottom! Will post up when jobs done incase any1 else gets same probs! Cheers guys!
