painting

Post by donnay1991 »

My tailgate had a fair bit of rust next to wiper and around the wiper so i rubbed it all down and filled it and primed it then painted but it comes out very dull with no shine at all and looks pretty bad. anything im doing wrong? or will laquer bring it out like the rest of the car?

If u say ur paint is dull , laquar it, it gives the shine, then when its dry, polish it up, it will come out smooth and shiny like the car , providing your car isn't faded or anything.

Im not 100% sure, worth a try if it brings the shine back, we use a electric mop to polish our cars after spraying, it does a good easy job at curing fades too ,

i did a rust patch on the rear of my car same as yourself

sanded, primered, painted with colour....then went all out with T-CUT colour restorer and the stuff that matches the cars colour afterwards aswell
Really pressed on and polished for almost an hour solid.......it came up looking like the rust was never there or it had never been painted.

a good blast with the lacquer afterwards then it was all gravy! looked shiny as day one and not dull

when you spray it make sure the can is warm and also the body of the car heat body with a heat gun or hair dryer the part your gonna spray as the paaint reacts with the heat and it gives it a shiny finish also when you primer it give it a coat of primer then leave it to dry for few hours then come back with fine sand paper n sand the primers surface off then reprime n sand again then add colour coat as this gives your paint a shiny finish aswell.
once sprayed leave it to dry for 42 hours before adding layquer then add 4-5 coats at ten minute periods then leave to dry for week before you polish it if you do that the you will have a show room finish to your repair.
and to remove fading get t cut but the colour of ur car version and use a mop on it then polish car by hand after n it comes up as good as new :)

do it just how every1 said steve, but.... you will not get it spot on with cans, no matter how long you try really, you can get it reasonble tho, best tip i could give it is just dont slap a wet coat on straight away, take you time 1 light coat after another, and let it build up............... make sure you get some etch primer, it will hold the rust back longer but it only needs a dust of that, also get some wax oil wen you have done and spray all the inside of you boot, this will also stop it coming back as fast, anything else you want just ask :)

agreed... it really is hard to get a perfect finish with rattle cans. it really is a matter of sanding well inbetween every coat, using heat to warm everything up and allowing a good 24hours min for everything to dry

ive got to redo my alloys in the summer so i will need loads more spray tins and some good hot weather....or the trusty hairdryer on the highest heat setting!

Wait what? Spray the car and leave it a week before you polish it? It will be like rubbing down concrete after a week. It's best to polish it next day after spraying it , so it is easier to bring out the shine while it is still fresh, although I don't know much bout spraying with cans tho, so they may be different techniques and polishing guides compared to sprayguns?
