I took it to the garage and read the ecu and they said its the egr valve. Do you think thats likely?
Im currently getting a warning light when driving which is what prompted me to get it checked!

If they have read the fault codes, then it is likely.
You can take them off and give them a clean to see if that helps first,

yea the garage said they would first take it off and clean it as when he was showing me the live readings on the machine he said it is actually working and the voltage reading is good he said it's like that it's not broken and just needs cleaning out 
I don't get any issues with performance etc when driving when the light comes on but in general i do get hesitation mostly noticeable in 2nd & 3rd when maintaining speed e.g. 20 or 30mph and the mechanic said that this EGR valve could cause that too...
