Burbling noise upon accelration

Hi all,
Can anyone help me, I have a burbling sound coming from the front of car which sounds like a slight blow in the exhaust. Also the car sometimes hesitiates in 3rd gear between 2-300rpm. I have checked round the engine for exhaust leaks and the exhaust all the way through with someone covering the tail pipe and can see nothing. The car isn't losing coolant and oil looks fine. My fuel consumption seems a bit excessive as well. If anyone has any ideas that would be great. Cheers.

The car is a 97 Corsa 1.4 16v by the way.
