rounded bolt on alternator bracket

Post by scoob8254 »

hi

i fitted a new radiator a few weeks ago and decided while at it to fit two new drive belts as the one for the alternator looked a bit crap and was very slack.. its a few weeks on and the belt for the alternator is now squeeking a bit for the first 10mins of a drive, so guessing needs the slack taking back out of it, only problem i have is that the 10mm bolt on the tensioner/ bracket is rounded ( the bolt that actualy slides up and down along the bracket not the 13/14mm bolt that acts as the pivot ) theres not enought room for me to hammer a slightly smaller socket over the top of it and after 2hrs today its got me beat..

i have two questions realy

Has anybody tried these things and are they any good http://www.screwfix.com/p/irwin-5-piece ... -set/96028

and

if i manage to get a replacment bolt, and if i manage to get the other one off, ive tried to feel behind the bolt and it feels like it screws into a bracket attached to the alternator directly, without the use of a nut, is this correct ?

as if i remove the bolt completely and it is a nut behind it, and it drops away, i doubt ill be able to attach the nut back on without first getting better access, which looks like removing front bumper and radiator or removing the steering pump

Quick update, the irwin sockets didn't help, took it to a local mechanic who removed the steering pump and spot welded an old socket to the 10mm bolt and used that to get it out, replaced it for me with another bolt so job done, cost me £25 (not Inc money spent on the vice grip sockets)
