So here is something I found. It's in another thread here. If you hold the two buttons on the MFD it will display your speed. Has anyone figured out how to make this permanent?

Do you have to keep the buttons held in while driving?

Well it only displays for a few secs. And will only go upto 53kph. But it runs off a cable very similar to the speedo cable. (Speed pulses) so there must be a way to keep it permanently on and working.

I just read there that it takes a reading from the ecu, and it is so that the radio turns itself up at a certain speed to compensate for road noise. Apparently it can be used as self diagnostics also?

I don't think it takes it from the Ecu. Could be wrong. I read from someone who was looking at the cables. Cause no radio I ever encounter turns up due to cabin noise have you? Really interesting. To find out.

I think it needs standard radio to work. But some cars have no speedo cable?

It is common knowledge, a guy called AJ on allcorsa figured out how to make it permanent but he was a wiring guru and said it was to much work to build a custom chip and mod the ecu chip

If he found it difficult it would be impossible for normal folk like us
If it doesn't fit,
force it,
If it breaks,
It needed replacing anyway

Hmm. That does sound like a lot of work. I'm doing a lot of research on it. I think I came across AJs post about it. But luckily I might have a few wiring gurus around :) but to be honest. Finding out that snipping the grey/red wire keeps the date on keeps me happy
