a flim of orange/brown at the very bottom of the bottle is normal. If the h/g fails, it looks like the whole lots is pale gravy colour.

Gargae will chage abou £400 all in to do a h/g,
the actual break down of costs would normally be

£40h/g set
£25 skim
£15coolant
£20oil+filter

rest is labour. So if you were prepared ot get the haynes manual out and have a go you have the potential to save lots.

good luck.

look in the top of the oil cap simon, if theres \'milk\' in there the h/g is on its way out (the oil and water have mixed). doesnt sound like its blown to me? there is always brown poo/ sediment in the coolant system, im thinking that uve just put a new rad on it as well, if u didnt flush it threw, you probs got all sorts of dirt in it.

that dont look to bad on the cap, u do sometimes get a bit on the cap if the cars been left for a while, or if u go on a short drive then look,
i had a similar thing before and it turned out to be a hole in the oil filter, was leaking oil and letting condensation in.
i dunno, cant really tell from photo, have you had to top the water up at all, or the oil? thats a sure sign. check the dip stick for milk, and you\'ll lose performance.
u can buy test paper to check the water and see if it has oil in it, but they are not 100%
flush the water threw, and keep an eye on it mate

past the max notch? take it that it wasnt lumpy and thick like sludge on the dipstick then?
sounds like it was just because you were on a hill, u could clean bottle out, try and flush the system threw tho if u get the chance. you\'ll find everyones water is brown
