no temp displayed on MFD

Post by andys15 »

hi, i no longer have a air temp display reading on my MFD, i have tried numerous new sensors and even tried a 10kOhm resister in there that should give out a reading of 10'c, which it doesn't, it remains with --.-c, ive tested the resistor ect and the sensors and they all work, but unsure as to why it does ot display it on the MFD, any ideas, thanks andy

Hello Andy,
Just a thought but:
Have you done anything that might have caused temp display not to work, ie, put a none standard vauxhall stero in. If you have a look through my posts you will see I posted something similar to your prob. I have not long since got the car and the display was showing a temp all be it a much lower temp than it actually was. I thought it might have been a faulty sensor and got a new one but the display just shows --:-- I have not really had time to look at it just yet but am now thinking I might have disturbed a wire or wires leading to the stereo when I replaced the bulbs that light up the heater controls (the MFD and stereo share some wiring).

hmm, that may well have happened, because i have also changed the bulbs in the heater controls to red led's, and then the left hand side knob, (temperature ironically) LED doesnt light up, or its intermitent, so it mayb have knocked the temperature sensor wire with it, etc, will go and have a look later in my car, see if i get continuity between the sensor and display etc and if the actul connector block in the back of the MFD is loose, so on the sensor bit, the opins would not be touching the PCB in the display, hence not working, might have to do a tiny weeny bit of soldering there, but thanks for putting some ideas forward.

woo, have now all being well, fixed it, because ive had the MFd out quite a few times to change bulbs and stuff, the pi9ns in the PCB had become loose, so after a bit of bending them etc, have got the temperature side of it to work again, and put original sensor back in and all was working, now just got to assemble everything back it and screw it all up and hope it still works, looks very effective if all works and heater leds work too, then all my lights speedo, tacho, heater controls and MFD will all have working red LEDs in. so sensor works fine, it was just to do with the MFD connector at the back and fixing the pins so they touch the tracks in the PCB, if anyone has probs with their MFD not showing bits etc, try havinging a look in the back and see if some pins aint touching, another thing is, when having the CD player on, the MFD does not show the date, but only the time, thought this might be a bit strange also, was the same on my old cd player, and still happends now.

Glad you got it sorted. You have given me a few things to look at when I get time.

it dosnt show the date with an aftermarket stereo because that part of the display normaly shows what station ur listning to when using the standard hed-unit
you CAN make it stay on even if u use an aftermarket stereo, im not 100% sure how maybe see a haynes manual for the wiring specs

(also did you know if u press both buttons on the display and holding it for about 10 seconds it will show u a digital speedo?)
think its only for electronic speedo versions not cable driven speedos... but someone test it and let me know lol

i'll test out that on the MFD to see if it's true. i have slightly fixed it, as it displays the time, date, temp etc, but only when i press one of the buttons to set the time etc, its not lighting up any of the other times, only maybe for 15 seconds when ive pressed the buttons, again, could be down to the pins not being connected right, soi again, will have to take it apart and messa round with them, thinking i should just buy a new MFD and change the red leds over, itll be much less hassle.

my original MFD stopped working so i got another from local scrap yard
once id fitted it tho the date stayed on even when i used an aftermarket stereo so im guessin 1 or 2 of the pins wer broken in it.

when you look at the front of the car, the lowest grill down at the bottom of the front bumper, (not the grille where you open the bonnet catch) butt he lowest one down, if you look into there and towards the radiator, you will see a metal stick thing between the bumper and radiator, and a wire coming from the metal bit with the sensor clipped into the metal thing, unclip thing and then pull out from the grille allowing you access to remove the sensor and replace with a new one and then re-clip it onto the hole in the metal stick thing. hope this helps
