Brake upgrade info needed.

Post by MattyB »

Hi all,

I'm currently in the process of upgrading my front brakes on my 1.0 ltr corsa to 2.0ltr calibra brakes. I have got a set of red dot vented discs and pads for the calibra and am hopefully collecting some new calibra calipers this week which i have been told just bolt straight on. I have also got some braided hoses to go with them.

What i'm wanting to know is whether i need to change A.) The master cylinder and B.) The front to rear (Still drums for time being) bias?? A lad who i work with recons i would need to do these jobs aswell.

So am after some advice from people who have done this conversion, people who know about it etc. To let me know if i would need to do this mods aswell.

Please help. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Matt

no, you dont need to do either.

the 1.0 comes with a clever lil sensor so you dont have to adjust bias. Secondly, the stadard servo easily handles the 2.0 callipers. V6 you struggle, but the 2.0 ones will be fine. I've got the same set-up on my GSi and when i tested them for the 1st time today (stood on them) they were f**k amazing. When you do the lines, pump all the dot 4 out and put 5.1 in there...makes such a difference!

Useful info there thanks. Why is dot 5.1 better than dot 4 then?

So take it they stopped alot sooner and meant you could brake later then!!??

I'm looking to eventually either put a redtop or a turbo in it eventually so thought i'd uprate the brakes first. Hopefully make the conversion abit cheaper then aswell.

if your upgrading your brakes id upgrade your tyres too, no point having super brakes if ur tyres cant grip properly ether
will make the most of your new braking power :)

Na you dont need to udjust bias .. not unless your having a heavy engine put up front .sounds like a good set up you have there!!.. well lets face it ..vauxhall put specific breaks on their cars for a reason .. the 1.0 litre brakes were fine but if its late breaking and harsh cornering you want then a good suspension setup and big brakes make all the difference ( jamex make goos coilovers for cheap)

Cheers.

Yeah hopefully should look pretty good when finished. Had quite a few positive comments on its looks already.
I've already got it lowered on V-Maxx coilovers so just the brakes to sort for the time being. Then eventually change the rears to discs and the bigger engine. So far i'm more concentrating on styling and interior then when get a full time job i'm gonna save for the big mods.

the 5.1 is synthetic, has better compression properties and also has a higher boiling point that dot 4. Just means you can push it harder and it will respond better and you are less likely to get fade due to the fluid.

I am not a big fan of kumho/falken/nankang tyres. Your best be are either Toyos, although in the summer, Yokohama have much better tyres for the hot and dry conditions!! I have a set of toyo's for the winter and Yoko Paradas for the summer. I tell you, the Paradas are f**k ace in the dry!! :)

Yep. Sorting out the brakes and suspension etc. Then when i get my own place my dad and i (hopefully) are going to attempt either a 2.0 ltr redtop or 2.0ltr turbo conversion.

So just getting the easier bits done first. Plus make it look slightly better. Hence eventually do the rear disc conversion aswell

Probably the cleverist dumb person in the world right there

dumb because u going from a 1.0 to 1 2.0 t (the extra power will result in death)

and clever because ur thinking ahead people usually buy the engine and they go Meh i need to do a poo load before i cn use it

well done to u dude n good luck :)

n BTW im on 40quid tyres and i nearly die in the wet and the dry :)
And I am back in a B after all these years whoop
