Re: GSi 8v build - On the road...
Well, last night i went to pick up some oil and filters that my good friend Paul W had got for me from Vaux (Trade Club ya see).
Was a good 50 mile motorway trip, so the revs were sat at a good 3-4k for most of the journey...and i was impressed. The motorway does not phase it at all, and it is so comfortable over distances, although the seats help this.
The high pitched noise was there on and off, but i ignored it and bombed on. (Didnt do it when i was coming home later on though.)
Anyways...i got 20L of 10w/40 and 7 filters! So thats the changes sorted for the next 3kish.
Also got some other things to try and sort today, the CV boots and the fan sensor wiring (although i appear to have lost the plug ).
p.s. i found out that when i go for it on the motorway...the fuel does then.....go :look

Re: GSi 8v build - On the road...
Well i did ma oil change today, even tho the weather was absolutely awful...loads of rain and quite a bit of snow.
Anyways, yea...i drained the oil, making sure as much as poss was drained. Also put some clean oil thru just to take any rubbish out from the bottom of the sump.
Replaced the filter, and also managed to get a bit more epoxy weld onto the bottom of the sump in an attempt to stem the flow of oil from the bottom until i get a new sump next month.
Also i retarded the timing by about 7 degrees. It idles a bit lumpier, but jesus it goes better! Feels far, far better.
CV's need another day...

Re: GSi 8v build - On the road...
once the engine has settled in...i will be doing it every 2-3k. Thats what i did with my old car.
Thats what i would recommend anyways. Depends on yourself really, as oil can be left to sort of 15k before being changed. but yea, i would recommend no more than 4-5k before changing them.

Re: GSi 8v build - On the road...
Well, today i washed it and gave it a good polishing. Unfortunately i left my clay and the wax at home...so i didnt get everything i wanted to, done.
Pics are crap and grainy, due to my phone being on the wrong settings. Will get better ones tomorrow i hope!
here's some for now anyways!
Like i say, the pics are crap...but with my phone on a better resolution and a better location, i should have some tomorrow!

Re: GSi 8v build - On the road...
Well i have a quick update having managed to get some jobs done.
The alternator bracket is now a more permanent and secure item, although still not perfect...but it is certainly safer. And, having recieved a bottom pulley, I can get the belt worries sorted.
The rad fan is now on a switch by the gear stick, which is a relief as it sounded awful!
And the final little mod that i have sorted is the choke cable. It isnt quite secure as yet, but it just requires a hole to be drilled into a metal piece i have. Does work though, so no more popping the bonnet to start it up!
So just the CV boots and fitting of the bottom pulley to sort now and then i can move onto pressing matters like the sump...oh and the cam timing needs looking at IMO. Thats where the power loss is happening.

Re: GSi 8v build - Cleaned and keeping!
Well, having decided not to sell it anymore...but to finish it, i thought it would be a good idea to give the GSi a wash. The cesaros made a return too after i fitted them on saturday. IMO they look way better and am gonna have to get the Pro Race 1.2's powdered i think.
Am so glad with how it has come out, being its first proper clean. Wash, 2 polishes and a wax, with silica on the wheels. Found a good location too. Unfortunately i only had my phone camera so they aint brilliant...but it still looks good!
And the final photo was ruined because the phone didnt take quick enough so ended up with a bloody shopping trolley in the picture! Not amused because its a good photo too!

Re: GSi 8v build - Next up...
Well, having decided to get the few problems fixed so i can finally enjoy the car...i am going to have to order a few bits when i get paid on Friday.
Autovaux have quoted me £70 on a sump and baffle plate for it, which shouldn't be too hard to swap over tbh...just time consuming.
I then need to replace both of the lower arms, as the bish has gone in the right hand one...so am just gonna do them both and thats done then. Wont be putting poly's in there though, want that little bit of give in there to maintain some stability on the crap roads. New bolts will be going in there too...and they will be getting painted and waxoyled.
I have a new rear engine mount to go on, again, with new bolts and the chassis treated under and around it with waxoyl.
Lastly, the exhaust needs taking off and re-sealing as it is blowing from a few places. I didnt put it on last time...and the garage didnt bother doig it proper. So that all needs sorting before the rolling road day.
Luckily i have a week off from the 14th March, so i have plenty of time to make good the work.
Also, with the sump change, and oil change will also come from that...and i also intend to drain and renew the coolant as i expect that has picked up a load of crap. May get a new rad too...have to see how it goes.

Re: GSi 8v build - Cleaned and keeping...
Well today ordered my sump and lower arms. Should be with me at the beginning of next week...fitting them next saturday.
I got a goodie bag of bolts for everything i am doing...so once the bits are here...i can do a major overhaul.
Got a weekend in work so nothing will be done over the next few days...not until next weekend...but the siump really is throwing alot of oil out when it isnt pressurised... bah!...

Re: GSi 8v build - Cleaned and keeping...
Well, on monday whilst i was off, i had a go at sorting one of the jobs.
The weather was great so that inspired me on. I was planning to swap the frint lower arms with new ones, and in doing so, replace the bushes and make sure its all good.
However, foillowing the unbolting of the ball joint and removal of the arm from the car...i discovered it was most definitely wrong.
The ones i had ordered were for late spec corsas, and the holes for the ball joints were in a different place. Lesson learned...late and early spec did differ in more ways than i expected.
So, i just copper greased the bits back up, and made sure everything was torqued up as it should be.
I would have photos but it doesnt want to upload at the moment!
I also have my new sump and baffle plate, which will be going on Saturday morning.
until then...
