somebody please help me!
i have a corsa 1.6 16v sport, year 2000, 74k mileage...
my problem is this...
when i start the car it turns over normally, then just as it starts it makes a horrible crunching noise coming from the engine which only lasts about a second then it sounds normal after that and when driving etc.
this happens particularly on cold starts.
it's a shame because i was just about to buy my white leather bucket seats but changed my mind in case the repair is expensive!

Re: crunching noise on startup!
lol...i think it pretty normal...it more of a high pitch squeelin sound? If the car is sat idle even for a day or so as they get older (particuallry when oil needs changin) the oil will drain to the bottom of the engine block. As the engine starts the sound u hear is it working wih a lack of oil of all its inner parts. If it cuts out straight away this is most likely the answer. I get it on mine from time to time. Either that or it a slipping belt that wet from condensation on wet day then friction drys it out and it can grip again and stops screechin?
If it none one of these then ur engine probs O_o! lol..soz, hope it not. But if it is u know u gotta get another corsa

Re: crunching noise on startup!
thanks dude! great help! i think it's probably the oil draining thing, because i always leave my car idle for about 5-10mins in the morning before i leave for work so the car is warm inside! its awesome. but maybe that's what's caused it? it didn't do it this morning though. oh well, gettin my bucket seats theday! no way, even if the engine was f**k i would get a new engine lol, way too much work has gone into this car!

Re: crunching noise on startup!
i dont think leavin it to warm up on a cold day gonna do that to the engine. see it the noise cuts out if you put ur fott slighty/heavily on accelerator when u start car. when it does it on mine i just add little throttle to turn over engine enough for oil to be spread about more. the sounds goes faster this ur prob. if it still makes the sound then i do not really know.

Re: crunching noise on startup!
Putting you foot on the accelerater isnt going to get the oil round the engine quicker as the throttle only get the air/fuel intake to rise therefore the engine will move a bit quicker once running.
Do you leave the fans on in the car over night on 2/3?
Also Cars need Looking after so give it a full service.

Re: crunching noise on startup!
Agree with deltakid. Your pre engaged motor is sticking in the ring gear causing this crunching noise on start up. Replace the starter and noise should be gone.
