maybe the alternator has packed in and the battery has run too flat to start the car but has enough to power the lights etc. Or because the battery is the original one as is the case so many times out of 10 and is unable to hold much charge. Maybe u could refill it and recharge it or better still get a new battery. Get one from a reputable seller just in case the battery isnt the problem, so that need be u can return it need be.

if your engine managment flashes when you try to turn the key its your imobilizer, it means it dosnt recognise your key
have you dropped your key or stood on it or anything that might damage the chip inside it?

altho

usualy you can hear the engine spinning tho trying to start but as the imobilizer isnt letting the fuel pump turn on, it wont start
worth checking you again as said could be a faulty battery if not then id get it on a diagnostic machine and make sure the imobilizer is switching off.

With the engine management light coming on I would suggest that its some sort of electrical problem possibly the emobliser as posted above.
You can check for electrical problems by doing the paperclip test have a look at this link for details
http://www.topbuzz.co.uk/info/fault_cod ... _codes.htm
if your having trouble reading the flashes record a video and post it.

You said there is a dull noise do you know where this is coming from?
If its coming from under the back seats then it just the fuel pump which is normal.
If its from under the bonnet then try to find where exactly, it could be the started has packed in and is just making a buzzing niose.
although a broken alternater would not explain the lights and radio coming on.

I think you should definatly do the paperclip test its like a free diagnostic that vauxhall would charge you £50 for the privalige.
