Legality of drilling an airbox....

Post by Jimi137 »

Hi every1. Ive just got my first corsa (1.2 16valve) and i wanted to make it have a bit more of a meaty roar. I was gonna do this the cheap way cuz im skint and just simple drill some holes in the side of the airbox.

I was wondering how legal this is though. Whats the polices view on this - e.g.: if they pulled me for noise or for something else could they impound the car for not being roadworthy if they saw them holes??

Also whats the MOT testers view on it? Would he pass it with a drilled airbox or would it fail?

If anyone knows about this please reply. Thanks every1

i dont think its ilegal, and it wont make THAT much more noise than standard
best bet is buy a spare from the scrappers n then just put a standard 1 on at mot time it may have an issue at mot time

that said i think it probably be ok

It is most probably, TECHNICALLY illegal, but not recognised by law enforcers.
Contrary to what most people believe, MOST modifications to a mass-produced vehichle are somehow, technically illegal, but not recognised by law enforcers because new laws are being made, re-made and undone all the time. :D

I really wouldn't worry about it, the police can't see you've done it if you do it in the right place and an MOT tester will still class your vehichle as road-worthy.

As long as i dont effect the emissions then anything on the engine side of things DONT come into the MOT. It will make it sound slightly more beefier but wont be illegal nor fair an MOT.

Wrong.

I bought a £60 carbon filter universal air filter from Halfords in a used condition (worth more new).
didn't fit (universal obviously means nothing these days), I bodged it, managed to get it working properly, sounded pretty sweet.

Recently I decided to derestrict & butcher my standard just to see what it's like..
-It has slightly better throttle response
-It has a deeper tone
-It makes a louder noise, even at low revs, so you don't have to KO your engine to hear a noise.

So I'm sticking with it for now. Gonna flog the carbon filter one and get an exhaust. 8)

 ...spare from a scrap yard for £5-10 for MOT time?

Derestricting & drilling is a good budget option until some people can afford a 57i filter.

I totally butchered a part of mine...the bit what people normally DRILL, I decided to totally remove...I couldn't do this so tried to make as big a hole as possible in it, then finally managed to get the whole thing off with persuasion from a hammer...so I need a new one for MOT time lol.
