Project Panda

Post by MattyB »

Thought it was about time i started my own project log. Your going to have to bear with me with this as it's ongoing and not going to be finished until i get a full time job and my own house (room for doing the 2.0ltr calibra turbo conversion).

I bought my corsa almost 5 years ago, cost me £1800 it's a V reg and at the time had around 36000 miles on the clocks. I bought this around a month before i passed my test but didn't drive it until two months after i passed (due to holidays etc!) It is a 1.0ltr Envoy so bottom of the range as simple as you can get!

Unfortunatly i have only recently started taking pictures of what i have done/doing so i'll try my best with the pictures etc to make them flow and show the work.

Although this picture isn't of my car this is what mine looked like (with exception mine had just the steel wheels). Dan it's white so you'll like it!

Image

It had been in an accident on the front drivers side (bit like adam's) but had been fixed! (Although i've since found out not brilliantly)!! :(

As you can see the car had black plastic bumpers, steel wheels and the interior (well what do i say!!)

Image

One of the first things changed was the stereo as it didn't work. So i got a cheap one from makro (a Goodmans)

I then set about tidying the car up as the paint work was dull etc. Once i was happy with this i then set about looking for a set of colour coded bumpers to improve the car's looks. Like most of the other parts i have had they happened to be Red. So after rubbing them both down priming and painting the car's looks had changed for the better.

Not long after this i went into work for my shift (Halfords) where i was offered a set of Lexus lights (Now i know most of you will say Nooooooooo!!!!!, but for £8.50 you can't complain and they will soon complement the rest of the car!)

I was pleased with the way the car was starting to look, but with the colour coded bumpers and lexus lights the back looked like it was missing something. after searching every scrapyard for 3months i eventually found one that had a spoiler in. They wanted £35 for it so i snapped that up. The spoiler was black and upon bringing it home both my dad and i agreed leaving it black would be different and would look good against the white. This is what it looked like with the bumper, lexus lights and spoiler, (at this point ignore the tints, wheels, aerial, exhaust and the fact the arches are missing! )

Image

Next up was the interior. That had to go. :D

I found an interior that i thought went well with the theme of my car from a 1.2 corsa. This cost me £90 from the scrapyard for the black carpet, all the black plastic panels, all door cards and the seats. They were disgusting when i took them out! (They looked like the car had been on a farm with the ducks living in it!) Once home a can or two of Auto Glym Interior Foam soon sorted them. They came up a treat.

Image

The car looked so much better with a black interior.

Next were the alloys! I managed to get a set of multistud 15" ripspeed wheels from work for something like £150 with tyres!

Image

This finished off the cars looks for the first year.

Onto year two!

Was a bit of a quiet year on the modification front.

This was caused by sensor anfter sensor after sensor problems. Eventually i had a new ECU fitted for £250 from ex Vauxhall employee's. Aswell as all this my heater matrix packed up. This was £400 to have replaced!

Of the mods i did get to do.

At the start of the year i bought myself some speakers for the rear as due to it being bottom of the range it had none. I bought some 13cm sony xplods! (they were pants!!). I had to get some fitting adaptors and then had to run all the wires from the front passenger footwell to the rear of the car as there was none.

I bought some universal side repeaters in black (wanted to tie it in with the black parts!) If you haven't guessed by now i'm going for the black and white theme! These can be seen in the alloy wheel picture above.

I bought myself a set of 17cm pioneer door speakers for £35 and infinity 6*9's for £34.99 both reduced at work (Sound amazing) and found a pre cut parcel shelf in scrappies for £5.

I also bought some white dials and during fitting i took off the needles and painted them red with model paint.

Image Not the best of pics of the dials.

That was about it until just before my birthday (end of second year of owning my car!)! It got broken into!! I was not a :D bunny! More like :o

Top of door was bent out and all that was stolen was my anti theft arial which i had bought a month earlier, a £2.49 torch from aldi and a £5.99 tyre pressure gauge.

My infinity 6*9's and all tools etc that were in the boot were left! Luckily!

Ok year 3!

More mods this year.

First off was an alarm system which i had been pondering over for a couple of weeks before the break in.

Then there was the shark fin aerial! This was to replace the anti theft richbrook one that was stolen. Cost me £9.99.

I also bought a Chrome tax disc and also wired in my blue led washer jets i got free from Redline! These are switched into the sidelights along with my footwell and under seat neons!

As i needed a new door, i went scouting the local scrapyards. I came across a 1.6 (well i think it was :meh: ) and guess what colour it was!! RED! It had electric windows, central locking and electric and heated mirror wiring. I got both doors and all the innards for £50. Bargin! I then went back and got the whole of the interior wiring including fusebox for £20 a couple of days later! This was due to not having the wiring in car again.

It took me 3 days to run and wire up the wiring inside the car under all the seats wrapping the extra wiring to the original loom. My car looked pretty bare.

As i was in university at the time i didn't get chance to wire up the door wiring for the windows and stupidly took out the manual parts! :? This was during the time when the sun was out and temperature was between 30-35 and one day got as hot as 37! All this and i could open the windows! :? Stupid boy!! Eventually got this sorted tho! :D

I also found a set of gsi sideskirts for sale (i had been after a set for ages! i got the skirts, L pieces and arches for £50! I started work on rubbing these down and then came across a set of skirts, L pieces and all four jacking covers which were all primered ready to paint for £77! I sold my other skirts for £50! Once i got them the paint was cracking so i had to rub these down and re primer before painting them! By this time it was winter and no chance to paint! :(

This year was my first and so far only time to the Performance Vauxhall Show! While there i bought a set of Chrome heater vents, a chrome grille, a black sunstrip and white griffin logo and my girlfriend bought me a set of black with white piping mats for my birthday. (3 weeks after the show!)

I then had the urge for a set of angel eyes which i purchased for £102. These look so much better than my old standard lights.

This picture shows the lights, sunstrip with logo, and grille!

Image

I got hold of some Chrome interior door handles from a vectra for around £15 and installed these at the same time as the heater grilles. This started the interior change.

Image

Think thats about it for year 3!

Year 4 was again a bit slow on the modification front. This was due to me starting and buying my new toy. My racing outdoor Kart.

I'm number 36. Gonna give a mention to my good mate Oliver (through karting) in kart 28 here! At the time we were both Novices so start at the back of the grid. At the start of this race we both got involved in an accident at the flat out sweeping first corner. Oliver saw the backwards facing kart late and ended up with his kart up on his side. The whole time i was watching what happened as i was mid spin avoiding the other part of the accident!

Image

It's not a cheap hobby which takes up most of my cash! Great fun though sitting roughly 1cm from the floor doing 70+ mph with upto 34 other karts on track! :D Bloody scary when you loose all your breaks as your approaching a hairpin at top speed though!

Anyway. Of the thing i did buy/get done.

I bought myself a Momo Corse steering wheel (again a bargin from work) £35. The boss kit was almost as much!

Image

I then also needed 2 new tyres on the front as they were (how we say Bald! 8) ). Instead of buying just the tyres i found a set of 15" ripspeed wheels that were hidden at the back of the warehouse at work. They were a couple of years old so go them for a bargin price of £85! The idea was to have the tyres taken off but in the end i just put these on the car for a bit!

Image

I had my windows tinted. It cost me £99 for all five as the company had only just opened. I had the front's lighter than the rears as i didn't want it too dark at the front.

I bought a painted scuttle panel for £25. This needed to be rubbed down etc (This is still currently awaiting paint!.

I also got a cheap ripspeed backbox reduced to £35 at work! (Can you tell i love my bargins! )

Thats pretty much it for year 4 with the exception of changing my headunit. Another bargin through work, got myself a ex-display Pioneer unit for £85, and my VMaxx coilover kit which was basically brand new and which i won on ebay for £122. Bargin!

Ok year five. Upto the present.

This year has so far found me spending lots on the car with bits and pieces but not much to show for it as yet.

I have finally got hold of a gsi front bumper! :D I've been after one since i got the car but have been waiting for one at the right price and unmodified. I managed to get the fron't bumper with fogs and the rear bumper for £75. Bargin! :D

Image

The replacement door finally got fitted, and the sideskirts finally got painted! (Due to eventually get two weeks good enough to paint! (My dad and i do the painting ourselves at home on the drive with an air compressor!) Aswell as the sideskirts being painted the electric mirrors the boot lock surround and door handles have also been colour coded black and have been fitted.

The sideskirts will be fitted soon. Need to get one part repainted first!

I have bought a Vented front wing which is in the process of being prepared for painting, aswell as eyebrows which like the skirts need a final paint job.

Probably my best buy of the year so far has to be my new alloys. a set of 15" polychrome Team Dynamic Monza's for £64 brand new. Unfortunatly there were no centre caps with the wheels and they don't make them in the polychrome anymore so i have plans for them. Altogether with alloys, fitting kit, centre caps and tyres transfered onto alloys they cost me £122. Unfortunatly i have not yet fitted these as i have since found a problem we think with the lower arm (from the previous owners accident) Hopefully in next few weeks this will be fixed.

Image

The one main difference which is noticable is my new interior! This was a present from my Mom and Dad and my Grandma for Christmas this year. At this point i'd like to say a HUGE Thank You to my Grandma as she passed away shortly after New Year. :( She will be missed!

The interior is half faux leather and (i believe Alcantara) and cost £225! I drove all the way to Middlesborough 4 days before Christmas to pick it up! :D The chap who i bought it off had it done at £500 had it fitted no more than a week and his car got wrote off!

Image

I have also started to colour code parts of the car. My first attempt was the Clock display! I wanted to be different so i colour coded the inside part.

Image

I picked a couple of brake wise bargins up this year aswell. Halfords are stopping stocking Red Dot stuff so i picked up a set of Grooved Calibra disc for £50 and The matching Pads for £25. I have since got new Calibra calipers for £40.

Ok not much more to tell you at the moment other than what i have been doing over the last week.

So this week i have been busy trying to get bits moving forwards before PV Show. I have taken My rear bumper off and primed it so i can Spray the plastic the same black as the spoiler and sideskirts.

From
Image

To
Image

Unfortunatly this means i'm driving around with a United Colours of Beneton car!

Image

I have also painted my calipers ready for them to be fitted!

Image

And i have also been rubbing down and have started to modify my Gsi Bumper to accomodate my post 97 chrome grille.

Image

So that's my car so far. Oh yeah and before i forget. To explain the missing arches and the odd wheels. I had the decent tyres changed onto my new alloys to find i couldn't fit them yet so this is the reason for odd wheels. The arches were taken off ready for the sideskirts and new colour coded arches but due to a repaint needed on one part this has been put on hold.

Hope you all like it. Please comment, opinions and advice welcome.

Ok a little update.

Yesterday and this morning i have been busy A.) Changing the lower arm to see if it is this that is bent, stopping the wheel going on properly! (It's Not   )

So now i'm going to try changing the front hub to see if that is the problem.

and

B.) I have also started modifying the Gsi Bumper to accomodate my post 97 grille. At the moment it is not fitted properly to car as towing eye needs to be bent for it to fit! It is not staying Carabic green and not finished yet (Miles off) as i need to fill, smooth and round it to make it fit and look professional. This is what i've done so far, to give you an idea.
