Centre Console Lighting

Post by leonjah90 »

Hi, i have a 1.0 12v R reg corsa, the heating controls in the centre console did not illuminate however a tiny bit of illumination was present when the fan was turned to position 3. i thought this was normal for there to be no illumination however i have been told they should illuminate. I took my car to a vauxhall dealership and got quoted £90 for the bulbs to be replaced. I dont have this sort of money, i was wondering if anybody has a cheaper or better solution, even if it means doing it myself to fix the bulbs. My main concern is opening up the centre console although my car does not feature a MFD so im guessing this would make it easier to access the centre console

£90!! WAT!?! them bulbs only cost £2 - £3 from halfords depending on what colour u get an u only need to replace three of em! i guess it the labour but it not too har really. Basically u need to remove the heater console and then the below the centre vents theres a piece of black plastic in a bar shape that u can unclip away from the back of the heater unit and then the bulbs are 5watt 1.2volt flat push fit interior bulbs. on some models this plastic bar isnt present, instead there are three black push/slide locking plastic blocks that each can be removed seperately from one and another to change the bulbs. u need to flip the vent round so u can get access to the back of inside of em ( feels/sounds like they gonna break, but they click then just swivel round 180degrees). Then there are two screws in each to the left an right in each vent that u unscrew. Then u need to pry off the heater slide switch (clips on/off) then the rectangular with round edge bezel pries away and there are two screws behind it, undo them then the heater console will be able to slide out; but there are four control wires that the buttons control that need unclipping from the back. grey, white, black and yellow clips need releasing by twisting them, but be careful not to break em. Theres the intial clip bit and the end of wires are coiled round and need carefully removing or u will break the plastic. Then u can see the black plastic bar / bulb holders and can replace em.
It sounds quite difficult but it really isnt. u just gotta be patient, u want a phillips head screw driver and a torch so u can see into the center vents to undo the screws. eitherway u just wanna note the order of the 4 wire connection points. u may only need to undo the white, grey and black ones then the heater unit will be able to lean forwards enough to get to the bulb rack/holders. As i said, it not to technical and most deffinately not expensive. The most u should expect to pay is £10 for the bulbs if not only a £5 in some places. £90 really is rediculous, but as u can tell it is a bit tedious and u really are just payin for the labour there.

haha i know, its ridiculous. im still going to look around, am sure somebody will do it for under £20 or something, thats abit more reasonable. i would do it myself but i'd end up breaking something

Went to a Vauxhall (Parts Counter) and cost me £1.36 )for 2 original bulbs to go behind the heater controls.

Before I tried using some bulbs of ebay but coudn't get them to stay lit up. They kept flickering with the vibrations of the road and in the end completely stopped working again. Was just down to the crap connections on them as they wasn't 100% the same as originals. Put originals in and had no problems.
