tapping noise from engine

Post by daz1968 »

helppppppppppppppppp i was driving home from work to night and i heard a very distinctive tapping sound from engine . not so much when driving but pulling up at a roundabout or traffic lights could be heard, when i got home i opened the bonnet and the sound is coming from the left hand side of engine which means i think timing belt but what are the symptoms. it has only just started half way home . i did drive erratically over some speed bumps when i first noticede the noise. also the corsa i am driving is a sting 12 v 3 cylinder with a chain timing belt. the car has done 76000 miles and is very well looked after so i am hopping to keep her for a bit longer please help

1.0 12v dont have a timing belt, its a chain, maybe one of the tensioners has worked loose or broke, relatively easy to fix thoug if you have some mechanical knowledge

hope this helps :)
Drive it like you stole it!!

Then when it breaks, push it like you stole it!!!!

Had same problem which is now fixed. Firstly tho CHECK your OIL!

You need to replace the timing chain which is gunna cost ya for labour unless you can do it yourself.
The tapping sound will be the warn chain which will be rubbing against the inside of your engine because it's become slack.

Timing chain kits are around £80 (ebay) and the same price it cost me for my local private garage to buy one. It cost me 4hours on labour tho. £240 in total.

Need a kit/similar like this. Get a GM one not aftermarket.

it sounds like your chain dude. if you are gunna change it tho make sure you change the sprockets as well. if you do it yourself go to your vauxhall deal and ask them for the modified sprocket data as the old sprockets teeth bend. you may also want to check that your bottom crank sprocket does'nt have play as this will make a fooking lovely rattle about 10000 miles down the line .hope this helps fully :D

It could be like these guys sed but defo check your oil. Mine started doing this a couple of weeks ago and after getting HiQ to check it they found the oil was a bit thin (plenty of it there just not thick enough). One oil change later - tapping noise is much quieter and car runs a lot more smootly

If ya don't get rid of the tapping noise problem then I really do recommend that if your going to keep the car you get the timing chain replaced.
Nice an quiet now since the change. Can't hear mine running now either from inside the car.

I had the same problem. It turned out the drive trains weren't lubricated properly. This is very simple, just remove the jubilee clips holding the rubbers and apply the relevant grease.

Also try these;

Check engine AND gearbox oil and change oil if necessary remembering to include engine flush!

Could be a stone caught in your brakes. Take off front wheels, blast the brakes with a high power jet or hose, if nothing comes free, take brakes off by removing spring with a screw driver, then push out the pistons so you can see better. Remember, when you put the wheels and brakes back on, pump the brake pedal a few times until they feel stiff again.
Please, if you know of ANY cheap/free/DIY mods for Corsas, no matter how tasteless or tacky, let me know.
