rattling noise

hi my car has onli just recently that i have noticed it is makin this rattling noice its hard to describe but its kinda like a tractor/diesel noise. i hve a 1.4 16v cdx corsa also it onli does this every so often so its diffucult to make out where its is comin from the onli help i can giv u is that its either under the car near the driver or in the engine bay sorry i cnt be more specific. when it does it most is either setting off goin up in the gears or comin down through them also you do not notice it unless u are goin in a built up area or with trees either side coz then as you know the sound reflects bak.
any help would be grateful ....
or if any1 knws of a simlar problem

sounds like it could be the cat,coz i had similar problem..does it sound like a tin of spanners rattling?

it could be but im unsure what it sounds like to be honest sounds like a diesels rattle to me lol. hope it isnt the cat but the y would it onli du it everyso often if the cat had gone ??

if its on its way out-then only a few bits of the honeycomb centre may have broken off,so sometimes they wedge and dont rattle,but sometimes they come lose.

im probably totally wrong lol,im just making a guess as u said it sounds like a tractor..only other thing i can think that would be tractor like is a hole in the exhaust system somwhere.

My mate had a similar noise on his CDX....really annoying rattle !!! It only happend every so often and it baffled me completly ......took it to a garage ....WHEEL BEARING .... get it checked !!!
