Engine Managment Fault Codes Decoding

Post by corsacrusin »

Hi all,

I been having a fault on my car for a few years! When I first got my car, my engine managment system indicator showed up. Checked some forums, to find it wasn't a big deal. The car sounded fine.

3 years ago, my water pump failed. The bearings had gone on them. I replaced the water pump.
A few weeks later noticed my water was leaking causing my car to get hot again. Found my cylinder head had warped. This also caused the oil to mulsify, making my car unable to start one day!

I got the cylinder re-skimmed. Replaced seals. Put it all back together! The car has been great!

Upon the past few months on long journeys my indicator would show up, no and again, randomly. Thus I ignored it!

Been noticing it more recently on most journeys small or long that my Engine Management System Indicator comes up. My car sounds fine, starts all the time.

I have noticed when drving my car does judder. I cleaned the spark plugs up last month.

I believe the fault I have is a sensor. Which one not sure. Not sure what my fault is.

I have checked these links
http://forums.corsa-b.co.uk/search.php?fid[]=54
http://www.topbuzz.co.uk/info/fault_cod ... des.htm#gm

I noticed under topbuzz website, it displays fault code, (12, 23 etc) But there is no indication what the flashes mean in relation to the fault code.

Can anyone clarify or clear it up with me on the fault codes? Thanks

I have a Vauxhall Corsa Breeze 1998 R-Reg at 1.2l 8V (X12SZ)

Thanks

so are u getting 12 and 23 when you do the paperclip test?

fault 12 isnt really a fault it just means start of diagnostic
and fault 23 means faulty knock sensor,
there is a list of fault codes on this forum see:
http://forums.corsa-b.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=105&t=11231

hope this helps

Thanks for the link.

Had a quick go last night shorting the connections out on my 16 pin connector. I caused a spark which I blew a 20A fuse, which governed my horn, instrument cluster and radio. Fixed now!

Took me a while today to encrypt it but got the hang of it.

According to your link provided I got 3 lots of 12 (which I ignore) then followed by code 47, giving the description:

47 Linear exhaust gas re-circulation (EGR) position n/a

Anyone with ideas what this means, where it is and how to fix it? Pictures would be fantastic.

Thanks all!

your egr is under the plastic air intake cover and just in front of you injector head, it is attatched to the manifold and as the name suggest flows exhaust gas into the inlet to clean up emissions, chances are you could get away with taking it off and scrapeing all the carbon that has built up over the years away from the sealing face, but to be honest most people just get a blanking plate/gasket made that way it never gets stuck open, I know the 16v cars need the ecu reset to tell it to ignore the egr if you blank it off, but im not sure if the 8v cars do,

either way blanking it off/ cleaning it should cure your problem, most of the later cars had the egr system removed due to then failing so much, and g.m./vauxhall supply kits and ecu upgrades to blank off egr on pretty much all the cars in their range which just goes to show how crap they are.

no its not it attatches to the block, coolant and oil pass through it too and it attatches to your lambda sensor to measure the airflow through the exhaust thus changing the fuelling so the emissions are not too high
Drive it like you stole it!!

Then when it breaks, push it like you stole it!!!!

Its on the side of the engine on a 16v but its under the intake cover on an 8v.

The egr doesn't determine your fueling it is an exhaust gas recirculating system so your exhaust gases are recycled under engine braking etc.

A lot of people think the 8v don't have them at all but some 8v's do.

Here is a pic of my car engine.

Under the plastic cover at the back is my fuel injection system along with what I think is the EGR sensor.

Here is a pic of it, I have circled to doubled check what you all saying is correct.

This problem was solved by replacing the spark plugs to a new set! Only cost me £10 to change them for new one's.
