alternator wiring

Post by robscorsa »

I've recently replaced the alternator on my 93 Corsa, with a second-hand one, bought off the net. There are some differences in wiring though; there are a couple of electrical components stuck to the outer casing on the original, but not on the replacement. From one of these, a small wire ran to one of the contact posts. Now that wire's not there, I can't understand why there is only one other incoming wire sleeve, albeit with two contact cables inside. It's baffling and I realise I'm getting out of my knowledge depth. Is there a wiring diagram anywhere on this site? My Corsa is an 8v SOHC, non-power steering, 'V' belt driven, single point injection model

There are a few different alternators that vauxhall used over the years but any one of them should fit no problem.

As yours is a 93 it may have some differences as its the first year the corsa was made.

There should only be two cables you need to connect a live and a ground, the live goes to passative on the battery ussualy a thicker cable and the earth will just connect to the body work somewhere.

It could be that your old alternator had the voltage regulator stuck to the outside of the case and the new one has it internal.

Thanks Haydn

From my very limited electrical knowledge, I thought that might possibly be the case, but I'm never convinced when it comes to the black art of Autoelectrics :D, so I assume the larger terminal marked B+ (10 mm securing NUT) would be the battery terminal and the other smaller terminal (8mm NUT) is the earth terminal?
