Corsa b stuttering when cold/damp, badly burnt d cap points.

Post by mattxx »

Hey All,

I need a bit of help!

When the weather is cold/wet, the car 9/10 stutters and tries to, if not actually cutting out when accelerating (unless i press the accelerator really slowly).

I'd been relying on spraying wd40 into the cap, which seemed to pick things up. Last week i got went 5 minutes in the car, came back to use it 5 minutes later, it was doing it (this was before i had wd40) and the car cut out and wouldn't go atall.. it would start but as soon as the accelerator was pressed it would stutter, jolt and cut out. Somebody came to my rescue with some wd40 and the car started and ran straight away. I'd noticed that the plastic seal behind the d cap had come lose, so i've taped that up in place to stop any water getting in.

Recently the car has got a lot worse, to the extent where it would randomly jolt and seem to just lose power (without cutting out) for a couple of seconds (travelling at about 50mph). I looked inide the d cap and the points are faily badly burnt..

I purchased a new d cap and installed it.. car still doesn't sound healthy atall and i removed the cap again to see thin black lines on the contact points (appears to be small burn marks) This is no where near as bad as the previous cap, but i feel if i drive it around too much the same will happen.

I'm really stuck with this and i have no idea what i should or what the problem is.

I've also ordered a new coil pack and ht leads to rule those possibilities out, but i'm a bit worried that it's a slightly larger problem with dizzy contact points being burnt?

Here's a pic of my old dizzy cap:

Thanks in advance.

hello mate

sounds to me as if your ignition system is preigniting with the rain cause miss firing which will give u your splutering and causing it to die . strip the cap down and closly inspect all the parts for cracks or chips.

also have a look at the exposed wiring that has anything to do with the fuel system.

good luk - Ryan
