waterpump?

Post by jimi12369 »

Hi, new to this site, but desperate for help so thanking in advance, 1ltr corsa breeze t reg, cutting out after about 5 mile journey, i can hear a click under the dash when it cuts out and engine very hot although temp gauge below normal ie. 90. been told could be waterpump or stat, so took stat out and filled with water, but not much pressure when engine run. what sensor tells ecu to stop engine due to heat?
Could this be waterpump although not noisy or maybe airlock? Any ideas on how to backflush or get rid of airlocks? also cant afford garage so going to have a go fitting watrerpump, sh*t scared of the engine mounting bit though!
thanks ,,, jimi.

engine will get very hot but if your temp gauge isnt going over 90 i wouldnt say it was overheating
most vauxhalls (especialy later ones post 1997) have self breathing systems so they can cure an airlock themselfs unless your headgasket is on its way out

what engine is it? if its not a 1.0i or a 1.2 16v id reccomend doing a paperclip test
if the engine cut out for whatever reason it will have recorded a fault

Thanks octane for your help mate, its a 998c so cant do paperclip test. athough temp says 90 degrees its only going by the water temp which i think may not be circulating, but the engine block itself is reaaly hot, also makes sense that the fan doesnt come in because the water aint going through rad, makes sense?? lol i want my deawoo back but my mate says keep the corsa because its mint! but looking mint doesnt help when everyones laughin when your stuck waiting for it to cool down lol.

your fan will kick in once it gets to about 100 on your temp guage
your thermostat will stop the coolant getting to the radiator till its warmed up (it does this to warm the engine up faster)
once it reaches right temp it opens the themrostat letting the coolant thru the radiator and cooling it
your fan usualy kicks in if the air flowing thru the radiator isnt enought to cool the coolant, (like when its a really hot day or your sat in traffic)

best way to check if water is getting to your radiator is wait till its warm (so about 90) and the give the radiator pipe a squeeze (with the engine off)
you should be able to feel the hot water moving, should be able to hear it flow too.

if not you have a fault thermostat, but i wudnt say so as your temp gauge is showing 90 when it cuts out and this is well within the acceptable norm

Hi octane mate thanks for your perceverence, taken stat out so it should run cold as they say, also took off thermostat pipe and water is flowing, but cut out again on me today with engine very hot, dont think its head gasket cos oils fine, but could be a blockage in engine water channels? or faulty temp sensor tellin ecu to cut out? anyway will get a sensor from scrappy, also see if i can pick up a crank sensor, see if its that,,, corsa full of bloody sensors and theyre very expensive, if they were cheap enough then i reckon 80% of posts would be sorted by changing at least 3 sensors in one go. thanks mate.

hey if you think corsa's have alot of sensors you should see most modern cars
they dont have engines its just a mess of wires!

best bet is to get someone to do a diagnostic on it
cost me around £20 for the guy and he was mobile, came to my house

to see if theres a block in your water system why not disconnect the return pipe to the expansion tank, and put a hosepipe in the tank, turn on the tap and see if the water comes through the return pipe. my sis had a similar problem on her saxo and it was her radiator that was blocked. just disconnect the water pipes on both sides of the radiator and and put a hosepipe in and blast it clear.

to check if theres an airlock just turn on your heaters and if they get warm as the engine does, you dont have an airlock.
Drive it like you stole it

Thanks for all your help guys, changed waterpump, only hard bit was getting the engine mount off, its difficult to get access to nuts, other than that it was easy for a beginner. This whole story started when my engine got hot and the car would cut out at low revs, thermostat was seized closed and waterpump was knackered, but these faults where masking what i think is a faulty crankshaft sensor cos i still got the fault, ive done some research and its a common fault,,,, but even after looking in the haynes manual and hours on the net, my sensor aint where it should be, ie. just next to the starter motor (on a 998cc 3 cylinder), i know it monitors the flywheel teeth but mines magic, it aint there lol anyone with a pic will get high praise indeed cos my fingers worn out tryin.
