Weird Noise
Hi All,
Went out this morning, and as i went to set off, i could feel the back brake/brakes had locked on, think it was the right hand side, made a bit of a clunk as it came off, but thought nout of it. About 5-10 min later, i could heard a loudish "werling" noise, it got louder as i got above 40.
Does anyone know what this is ? As hadnt noticed it till this morning .. and think it could be linked ?
Cheers.

Re: Weird Noise
DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR UNLESS YOU HAVE 2!!!!
I had the exact same thing happen to me a few weeks ago and thought nothing of it and cuz i kept driving it (although only for about 15 miles) the wheel bearing completely broke and welded itself to my stub axel and i had 2 get a new one of those as well. also if it completely brakes your wheel will fall off and might drop the car onto its rear which would obv be very dangerous and damaging
It sure is the wheel bearing and if your lucky that is all. if its done some damage then you might need a new stub axel as well
Wheel bearings aint much tho - if you can do it urself the kit is about 20 - 30 quid, if you can't most garages should do it for about 70ish - might be more or less depending on the area you live in
This is really weird you know cuz i had the EXACT problem you described a few weeks back - with all the noises and bangs ect lol

Re: Weird Noise
Thats weird... cus ive just spoken to someone else. . and they said the locking is too do with the poo weather .. which i agree ... and just the noise is the shoes rubbing on the drum ... so wonder which it could be. Its only just had an MOT ... so if it was anything bad like you mentions ... sure they would of noticed ... and it went to 2 garages. lol.

I agree with shoes rubbing, it is thatsort of weather. Drive a bit with the handbrake on slightly and it should go away.

Re: Weird Noise
Worn wheel bearings create a drone noise that changes with the speed of the car.

Re: Weird Noise
Yeh you do have a point actually it could be that. but the weather can also cause the bearings to go - especially if you dont have the little metal caps over the wheel bearings. The water and greese off the roads just corrodes the bearing

Re: Weird Noise
Yeh the clunk is fine .. i can live with that lol .. its just the weird stupid noise it does ... one thing whats happened ... to do with the back brakes .. is it had a new handbrake cable the other week ... and the garage did it too tight .. and it was continuously sticking and got hot so much it actually burnt the paint of the drums! So just wondering wether its cooked the shoes ?
Have tried putting hand brake on while driving .. but still continued to do the noise ... but when i parked up i kept putting hand brake on and off .. with the button in ... and i could hear a noise ... like metal hitting metal ? Is this a sign the shoes have gone ... which creating the noise while driving off bare metail scraping the drum ?
Cheers.

Re: Weird Noise
You need to have a look. If the shoes are glazed just rub them with some emery paper.
Actually I would bring it to the garage that did the cable and let them sort it.

Re: Weird Noise
I think the shoes are completely worn down on the left side ... as when i was applying the hand brake between 20 - 30 it was making a sound like metal on metal rubbing noise.
I'll jack it up in the morning .. and check the wheels to make sure the bearings arn't going ... and will check the brakes while im at it.
Cheers.

Re: Weird Noise
Hmm .. I think its looking more towards the wheel bearing is on its way out ... or just wearing ... or full of crap ?
I jacked the car up ... span both back wheels ... and checked for play ... which there was no sign off ?
Think i will buy a set of bearings .. and look into swopping them ... Is this an easy task to do ? Or more of a garage thing.
Cheers.

Re: Weird Noise
It's pretty straightforward, the only thing is you need to set the hub retaining nuts to a specific torque.
