has the X12XE engine got timing chain or belt if and what sort of milage should they be changed

X10XE and X12XE are timing chain. If you haven't had the chain replaced then I would get this done. Cost me around £250 (incl labour). That was also including an oil & filter change as well.

My self had mine done at 62k miles.

spot on is there any way of inspecting the chain or not

yep just remove the rocker cover and you will see it on the left , just turn the outside pully's and the chain will turn to inspect
