Engine Overheating

hey all

when my engines been running for about an hour or so, and then i come to idle say at traffic lights and your ther for quite a while, the temperature gauge on dashboard goes up into overheat section quite quikly, the range on the gauge is 90 - 100 C, when it gets upto 100 C the fan kicks in so i know the engine gets very very warm, the only way to cool it down is to start driving, ive had a few suggestions as to what it could be, but just wondering whether ther is any mechanice out ther willin to offr advice as to what it could be, any info given is appreciated.

the car is :
vauxhall corsa 1998 5 door
1.4 8v breeze

The fan kicks in but it doesn't cool it? You need to look under the bonnet and make sure the fan is actually working when it is supposed to. Possibly a fault with the bearing or something.

Hi mate, been through same myself, poss cause is water aint being circulated, check your bottom hose from rad to see if its hot, if not its prob your thermostat stuck closed, a common fault, if not could be knackered waterpump another common fault or an air lock, if heater air is hot, then its not an air lock.
Make sure you got antifreeze in and you got water in your resovouir. After that i'd check there aint a blockage ie flush water through the system.
You can also check your fan is working by taking the fan temp switch off (its on the rad) and bridge it with a piece of wire, with ignition on, the fan should come on, if it does but doesent when engine hot its prob the fan temp switch, also on rad.

Just thought id say that 100 still aint dangerous for a corsa b. They do get pretty hot - i dont want to insult your intelligence here but you have checked simple things such as coolant levels, coolant mixture (too much water will cause issues) and if you are loosing oil and coolant (if thats the case then it could be your head gasket is going). Check the obvious things like that first

yeah i got antifreeze and plenty of water in, is either the thermostat or water pump a big job to replace, or exspensive for that matter?

thanks for your reply, appreciated. i know for certain it aint losing oil or coolant because i had a brand new rad about a month ago and every day i check underneath engine to see if its leaking anything. yeah i got plenty of water in coolant bottle and when i had new rad fitted the garage put right mixture in.

Hi again, waterpump is bout 20-30 quid off ebay, stat bout 10-15 (you have to buy the housing cos its all built in) waterpump aint easy as it should be to change,, you have to undo engine mounting and support engine with a jack, also take your belt off pump. thermostat is easy on 998cc breeze but think its complicated if you have higher cc engine.
Just a note: waterpumps are prone to give probs and its recommended that you change stat and belt same time as you change pump.
