Could my head be gone if after doing a compression test it was still showing good pressure? Also no milky oil

a wild guess, but the first thing that comes to my mind is the egr valve simply because it is involved in the cooling and the reving of the engine. might be worth taking it off and cleaning it. theres a guide in the FAQ i think.

like i say wild guess but since u've checked all the senosrs etc. mite b worth a go :)

Basicly you would have to be a right tw*t to break one for parts

Yes it is a wild guess. :) The EGR will not cause overheating.

sorted the overheating, have blanked off the egr valve but engine management light is on, is it on because the egr valve is blanked off?

Now that is weird. Never heard of the egr valve causing overheating before. Disconnect your battery overnight and hopefully the light will go off.

the eml is on because the egr valve is not plugged in even if you have removed it the sensor on the egr valve still has to be connected to the engine loom to keep the ecu happy.....
