Corsa B 1.0 12v Drinking Fuel

Post by mbirtles »

Hi all, my son has a Corsa B 1.0 12v 1999 on a T plate. He reckons to get about 280 miles on a full tank. Whilst it doesn't sound a lot, the car does drive fine. There doesn't appear to be any smell of a fuel leak. The air flow meter and lambda sensor were replaced about 2 months ago due to power loss under acceleration but like I say, the car now drives alright.
Any ideas as to why this car has a liking to fuel so much ???
Many thanks

if he is taking the revs quite high this will make it use more fuel and the petrol prices arent helping either and with it being a small engine it has to work harder than a bigger engine which could also contribute.

does he drive fast? does he do journeys around town alot?

my girlfriend has a 106 1.4 and that gets around 300 miles from a full tank but she drives down country roads with the revs sat around 3000, its when she is going through the gears more often that the mileage gets lower

280 is average for myself with my 1.0l 12v. when i had an air filter on it dropped to 250. i have done 330 on a tank once but that was when i drove her all day long on a motorway.

where do you go for your petrol as petrol from the likes of asda is crap and you dont get as many miles from it as you would from say shell. try changing your petrol station to see if the mileage varies

atm its pay 109.9 from texaco or pay 114.9 from shell.

i know what most would go for. shell is only 94 octane too compared to 96 at texaco

You all 1litre drivers must be racing your engine around all the time.

My 1litre is used mostly for delivering pizza's every night (stop start driving, bad for fuel economy) and I get just under 400miles to 1 full tank.
I've also noticed when just motorway driving from a full tank I'm into just over 500miles from 1 full tank.

I mainly used local Tesco's filling station. I always change gear between 2000 - 2500rpm and motorways cruise at 62mph.
Also I never coast in nutral and always use my gears to slow down (using 'overrun').
I would think anymore than this it would drink fuel like no tomorrow.

Same with every car tho, don't change the car just change your driving style.

my day consists of start and drive for 10 mins and stop, then start and stop for another 10 mins back from work. about 4 times a week i will drive for 20 mins to my gf's and 20 mins back but thats it.

i dont know how you do 400 on a tank let alone 500. have you got an extra tank somewhere

problem with the 1.0 is you have to rev the nuts off it to get any sort of speed
i used 2 find i was filling mine up alot mainly to get up to the speed limit you have to give it some throttle

reminds me of the topgear test to see which is more economical a toyota prius or a e90 m3
prius was driven flat out, m3 just had to keep up, and m3 ended up getting more mpg than the hybrid!
mainly because to move at higher speed it dosnt need revving to the max
