auxiliary belt squeaking

Post by deadliner »

i noticed this morning the auxiliary belt seems to be squeaking. firstly. anyone know why its doing it? its on a 1l corsa.

is it the waterpump? or maybe one of the bearings in the pullies? the belt seems fine, not loose etc.

any ideas?

is it safe to drive with it doing that, till i can get it fixed?

If it is the belt it is safe to drive, if it is something else I would replace it asp. Spray some wd40 on the belt and see if the noise stops.

if i was you i wouldnt spray wd40 on it. check the belt for wear and make sure it is sat flush with the pulley and not sat below. if its sat below it needs replacing. and this will stop the squeeking.

its not the best idea spraying penetrating fluid on to a belt or pulley when friction is involved as the wd40 will stop the friction therefore it will stop the squeek but can also stop the belt old or new getting proper friction/grip again

WD40 is not a penetrating fluid, it is a moisture dispersant. The whole idea of spraying it on the belt was to see if it stopped the squeak, this then would either point to the belt or another component.

why do people spray it onto seized nuts and bolts then if its not a penetrating fluid? i still dont recommend spraying it on a belt, it acts like your oil in your engine leaving a film between the pulley and belt, i know it will stop the squeek but i still dont recommend it.

checking the belt isnt sitting below the pulley would indicate the belt making the squeek and also taking it off and checking how worn it is, might take a few minutes longer but is much better in the long run

WD = water dispersant. 40 = 40th attempt. It will wear off the belt fairly quickly.

You won't know until you try these things yourself. I think brake cleaner evaporates too quickly and there are solvents in it which will damage the belt.

well its probabaly 3 or 4 times better than wd40.

we bought a box full of a company in ireland, expensive mind. but still reallly really good stuff. used it for the plastic nuts on wheel arches and worked perfect
