Coliovers or uprated :s

Post by Shezer »

Hey guys on a recent topic i asked whether or not to use springs alone and i was advised not to :L.

So new question.. what do you rekon i should go with?... a coilover kit? or a uprated kit of say 40 or 60mm?
i understand that coilovers are good as you can adjust them to what ever high you want rlly.. but i doubt i'd do that once i have installed them so would i better off saving abit of money and just getting a 40 or 60mm suspension kit?

and also, im planning on using my 14" sxi alloys which im in the proccess of spraying white :D. What would you guys think i should lower my car by? 40 or 60?.. i dont like the super low look, and normally prefer the look of 40mm on 15" wheels, but as my wheels slightly smaller im thinking maybe lower it 60mm to make it like the same? :/ hmm maybe a coilover kit wud be usefull aha!

need ur comments guys loll
Cheers :)

mines lowered 60mm on uprated shocks and springs.not had any issues apart from a banging exhaust, but thats due to the backbox been closer to the rear axle now its been dropped.personnaly i would not go anylower becase its rather low as it is and any lower would just make it a joke to drive, esp on all our pot hole'd roads!but thats just my opionion.

i did however originally just lower it 40mm on springs with the standard shocks and to be honest it was not low enough and did not look much different from standard and i was abit dissapoited, hence lowering 60mm.as far as the handleing on just springs it was firmer than standard but there was a fair bit of bodyroll.where as now,my car is rock hard,no flex init atall, and no bodyroll, even when cornering hard!

imo im glad i ditched the springs and went for uprated shocks and a 60mm drop, and like u said im not really gonna be adjusting it so i dint see the point in coilovers but ultimatley only u can make the choice.

ive currently only got 13inch steels with big fat tyres on a 60mm drop and dont have any rubbing issues, even when fully loaded with pasengers.from what ive read on here myself even 15s on a 60mm drop wont cause you any problems atall,so long as they are the correct offset,et49.

most aftermarket alloys are not available with this ofset and therefor will/may cause rubbing problems.thats why most people stick with vauxhall alloys, like of a cavalier or calibra.

like i sed tho,my backbox bangs like a t**t now ive dropped it 60mm,but it did bang at 40mm and it even banged a few times when standard! must be a design fault!?!?

anyway, goodluck with your project and anyprobs with fitting,if your doing it yourself like i did, just giz a shout and ill try to help u.if your paying a garage to do it then thats upto u but it really was easy to drop it myself and it took me about 1.5 hours at home.i must have saved about £80-£100 in labour so just bear that in mind.

hope this helps! :D

It will be solid for another few years tho. Handy hints. Check the front chassis before it reaches the wheels, chip the underseal off. Check the rear spring mounts at the top where they contact the body. Check right rear wheel arch where the fuel filler is, I carved out half a bucket of wet slime and found it was well rusted. I mean right up there. The rear wheel arch(both)where the body panel meets the chassis just behind the wheels closer to the front of the car. Two grommets under the floor in the rear seat area, one on either side. Rear valance. Hope this helps you guys.
