I suppose it's obvious but go 1.2 for cheaper insurance.
Peanuts. Corsas go for anywhere from £50 (my poo 1.2 merit) to a few grand.
IMO...don't waste too much money on your first car. First car..so chances are you'll make mistakes in it, minor scrapes, clobber a few kerbs etc. Everyone's been there, it's just some people don't admit it, lol.
Once you get more money you'll grow out of it's engine sizes/spec pretty quickly, plus as you get older you get more NCB and probably be earnign more. So any money you've thrown at extracting 2bhp out of it will be a complete waste of time.
So...
Spend £500 on a shed. Abuse it for a year, then upgrade.

It's annoying true, and I think most people would agree in retrospect.
If you spend too much on a crap engined car you'll end up throwing money trying to extract 2bhp out of it only to sell up in a year or so and buy the bigger engined higher spec car you wanted but couldn't afford in the first place .
Oh and it really isn't worth doing anything under the bonnet. It'll either screw or invalidate your insurance for miniscule gains. As I said, go for something cheap, whatever comes up. Thrash it as all learners/new drivers do, and save up for the higher spec car you really want once you have a years NCB.
Remember, as long as you get something road legal and cheap enough, you'll be able to sell it easily enough for no real loss. Loads of market for small cars!

I never hit owt in my first 280 quid mk3 fiesta, then after nearly a year spent 4k on a decent car and killed gearbox then blew engine then smashed it up lol.
