Also I'm concerned about putting the head back together, will the timing be out? We used all the tools described in the haynes manual?

Yeah that's a common place for them to go, get the head checked still though, as for timing if you took it off with the timing marks lined up then when it goes on lined up it will be perfect

Ok so finally finished the job today, thanks for your help guys, everything is working, will see if it fixes the problem...
