Re: GSi 8v build - New engine!

Post by Chrex »

Sun 6th April

Well, the project has taken a quick and very positive turn. Last night (saturday) i went and picked up another engine from a gent in wales.

It's a c20SEH, but it has had a huge amount of work done to it! It came out of a mk1 astra that was wrecked during a rally, and the spec list is huge!...

Worked Head (Ported and polished etc)
Enim Cam
Kent Springs
RIMFLO valves
FELPRO head gasket
Heavy Duty Followers
Anti Pump Hyd lifters
Lightened and balanced
Piper oil pump
Heavy Duty big end and main bearings

It was putting out the best part of 170bhp at the wheels, and will rev well past what my clocks will show! :P Cant wait to see how it performs once i've got the carbs on it and its all running as it should! :)

Heres some pics i managed to get as i was putting it away...

Is going to get some engine paint before it goes in and then im hoping that i can have it in the car by the end of the month! Woo!! :D

Back on track again!

Re: GSi 8v build - Lots of Waxoyl!

Post by Chrex »

Sat 19th April

Well, having done virtually no work on the actual car now for near on 7 weeks, i decided it was time to pop it bk up on the axle stands and get something done. So i went and spent some money on underside treatments. Some wire brushes, etch primer, stonechip spray and a big tub of waxoyl :)

So on i cracked wit getting all the rusty crap off the car. With the help of my girlfriend, we were able to brush down and clean off all the necessary rusty areas...namely the rears of the sills and the front end.

Once the sills were cleaned, i etch primed the rusty areas and then slapped on the first layer of waxoyl. It will be getting about 3 coats on the areas that were bad, and 3 everywhere else.

The front end cant really be done until it comes back from having the strenthening plates put on, so i left that un-treated for now, just gave it a brush down.

And the slam panel and crossmember that's currently untreated.

And thats all i got done today, though i got it done quicker than anticipated! :D

Wont do anything tomorrow (sunday) as its my birthday, so my next day off is thursday, when it gets more waxoyl! :look:

Re: GSi 8v build - Interior tidied and sprayed

Post by Chrex »

Thursday 24th April

Well i spent today preparing it to go off to a welder to have the seats and strenthening plates welded. So after clearing all the crap out it looked far tidier...as it should.

Image

however, i then decided that it was the perfect opportunity to get it all sprayed...as there's gonna be no carpet or anything, it definitely needed something. As i really wanted it done before the seats went in, i bit the bullet and bought the required sprays and cracked on.

A thorough brush and hoover, followed by surface cleaner...made sure everything was prepped. Various bits needed wirebrushing and etch primer, and once these were sorted the whole lot got grey primer.

Once this was dry, on went the Satin Black...and i was amazed by the result. Wasn't expecting to look like this after the first of 2 coats. Dont really need a second, but will do one anyway to give it some depth.

After :

Definitely pleased with the results. :)

Also got my cav 2.0litre shafts off their outer CV's, so they're ready to go on too! Once the car is back from the welding place...i can waxoyl and stonechip the front...and then get the engine in! Woo!! :D

Thats all folks!

Hmm...i have been wondering how it'd look on white wheels. Am gettin some Cesarios for it at some point...wit the new Toyo R1R's for track days and summer. Dunno whether to do em Satin/Matt black or White.

White gives it the MO look, but the Black continues my black wheels trend. Ah well, have to do a photoshop at some point. Tbh at the moment, be glad to see it on the pro race's...means it ready to roll! :P

Saturday 3rd May

Another quick update.

Whilst the car was away, i was desperately thinking of things to do yesterday...as the weather was glorious.

In the end i managed to get my engine painted. Another Satin black jobby, but it looks alot better than it did! :) Will get pics later and put them in tonight.

Car should be back wit me on tuesday. Have seen what they've done so far, strenghtening plates and towing eye is done, just needs the seats and the harness plates doing now. Looks good so far! :)

Thats all for now. will put photos up of the engine later!

Am made up with the work, and the fact that hes done it already for me. Is all solid, and the seats sit lower than the sport seats do, so is a better driving position! :)

Better pics asap...Happy days! :D

Well i got it back from the welders this evening. So i can now crack on with getting it all completed! :) Slow but steady...month or 2 and i may have myself a running car!

Steering wheel to go on next i think. Could be a bugger...but the snap-off boss is another highlight :)
