That's looking awesome mate
If it doesn't fit,
force it,
If it breaks,
It needed replacing anyway

Re: Old man's gonna go racing
Thanks Guys!
A while ago I bought two seats for the car from Autostyle. I decided last week to ditch the idea of actually racing with that seat, and bought me an FIA approved seat from ATS. Tonight I put the aluminium mounts I bought with it on there, and put it in the car for a bit of a look-see....
This seat won't be going in the car as yet - will put the cheapies in for now. Will fit the Cobra seat once I have the time to do it properly
Will carry on in the morning
Oh ja- fitted the starter and alternator too

Re: Old man's gonna go racing
Busy day today
Started off by replacing the cv boots on the driveshafts. New grease, new boots, nice and clean, then put 'em in place. Tightened the cv's and done. Then I set about fitting the seats. Bit of a mission... End of the day they are in, but I'm not happy with the position of the driver's seat - it isn't properly in line with the steering wheel. Sits about 4 inches too far to the right. Will sort that out quickly tomorrow morning before the shops open.
Need to buy some cables to sort the wiring now that the battery has been moved.
So tomorrow after fixing the seat position I'll be concentrating my efforts on getting that motor to start

Re: Old man's gonna go racing
So today I did that driver's seat. Eventually got it directly in line wth the steering wheel... Took up a lot of time, but it's done. Did the harnesses, then got busy in the engine bay again. Put the radiator in, did the last of the piping. Threw water in the cooling system, oil in the motor. No drips - normally a good thing haha
Still fighting my way through the wiring. With the starter panel, cut-off switch and relocated battery things obviously got complicated a touch. Managed to source some nice cabling for the job. Will have to do it at night this week.
On the engine itself I still need to fit the crank pulley, alternator belt, air filter.

Re: Old man's gonna go racing
Got home tonight and got into my overalls. Laaitie joins me in the garage
Me: You felt what the driver's seat feels like yet?
Him: Nope
Me: Give it a try
Him: Wow! Feels great!
Me: Comfy?
Him: Yup!
Me: Good! Now pump the brakes
So - brakes are bled lol
Completely flushed the system with Dot 5.1. The pedal is nice and firm, but it has a bit more travel than what I'd prefer. Think it's just the rears that need some adjustment. Will only adjust them after I have actually driven the car.
Then also put the crank pulley on, fitted the alternator belt and tensioned it. Next was the air filter housing, then started with making the wiring look tidy.
Chuffed with all we got done tonight
Some pics:
My purdy new BMC filter (with K&N oil haha)
As you can see on that last pic, the wiring is still going to keep me busy for a bit...

Re: Old man's gonna go racing
What a day of highs and lows this was
Started off bright and early by heading to the garage with a jerry can to get some petrol. Wife reckons I'm being heluva optimistic haha
Get home and get to work. Connect fuel lines, put the front wheels back on the car. I notice they are very toe-in, so just adjust it to what looks straight-ish, slightly toe-out. Carry on with the wiring, and after a while I am ready to connect to the battery. First connect the positive, and cautiously tap the negative terminal to the battery. No sparks, flames or smoke - good . Connect the terminal and get ready to swing the motor.
I first turn the ignition on to check for smoke, sparks and flames - no problems. I hear the fuel pump running to prime the fuel line - good. Switch off and on a couple more times to make sure there is fuel in the rail, and I hear the pump taking strain - got the fuel lines on the wrong way... Idjit... Set about switching the lines, and as I remove the one line I get what feels like about 4 gallons worth of 95 octane shot straight in my eyes. Thankfully my wife heard me groaning and realised there was trouble, and quick as a flash she was there to guide me to a tap so I could rinse my eyes out. 5 minutes later I'm back in the garage.
Get ready to crank the motor... Kinda holding my breath before activating the starter.... Engine goes Whum... Then nothing... Battery's flat
Charge the battery while fitting the headlights and sorting that wiring, check the battery with a multimeter and decide it's go-time. After 2 seconds of cranking it bursts to life! Great success! I allow it to idle for a while, check that there are no fluids dripping - all's well. I do however hear a slight noise that doesn't sound quite right, but I'm thinking it'll go away once the motor's settled
Decide I'm going to take it around the block. Hop in, select reverse, I go forwards... No biggie - quick fix that I'll sort later. Push the car out the garage, and proceed out the gate. I'm rather concerned with how dead the car feels, as I have to give it quite a bit of revs and ride the clutch to get up the incline through the gate. Once I'm in the street, I realise I was in third gear all the time. I go from concerned to impressed
Take it around the block using only 3rd & 4th gear. Everything feels good, boatload of torque in this motor. Go back home to sort the gearlever out.
Re-align the gearlever, and now I have all the gears. Arse is itching so we go for another drive. The motor is VERY responsive. Pull away normal in 1st and give it a bit of gas, it breaks traction from about 2500rpm and flies through the rev range. We go across the main road to the sports stadium, as it's quiet and there are some nice tight bends. Really happy with what I feel so far - the arse is fairly loose, but not stupidly. There is still a bit of understeer when you push too hard, but I shouldn't really judge as the wheel alignment is way out
So I get back home and listen to it idle - that noise is still there. Open the oil cap - sump compression... Obviously some blow-by on one or more cylinders. And now the radiator sprung a leak too...
Do a compression test, starting on no 1 - get this:
Now normally when you get this reading on a standard Corsa, that is good. I however immediately knew this is where the problem is. Why? Because this is what I expect and get on the others:
Skuins bedonnerd about this right now
Anyways, here's what it looks like now

Re: Old man's gonna go racing
So the VW club hosted a track day at Kyalami on 5 Oct
The Corsa was not ready, but I had already paid for the day... Decided to take along what was available

Re: Old man's gonna go racing
So today I carried on farting about in the garage
All the body parts that I took off the car have been primered (bar the bumpers, mirrors and fender trims), and the inside painted white. I can't paint for poo, so my neighbour offered to paint the outside. He actually paints really nicely, so I'm taking him up on his offer.
Still need to put the one door back on the car, then sand it down so he can just grab the gun and paint. Will definately come out better than my efforts lol.
Never wanted it to be a show-quality car, but if I can get it looking fairly pretty it's a bonus
As it stands now:
As you can see, this car needs a serious elevation decrease - will worry about that next week... Will just quickly take out the springs and take them back to the blokes that made them. Need to come down about 80mm all around
Oh ja -pic from yesterday when I did the bonnet pins.
You might also notice the pretty new radiator I put in. Decided to get the Gsi radiator as it's quite a bit bigger than the 1300's. The 1300 radiator fan doesn't fit on that radiator, so I bought 2 x 10" electrical fans for it. They are engaged through a fan switch that I added to the radiator. Comes on at 92 deg C, switches off at 87 deg C. Saw it working a charm with the car idling - easily brought the temp down low enough for the fans to switch off again
Starting look rather suspiciously like a car...

Re: Old man's gonna go racing
Long overdue update
8v motor died... Properly...
Decided to just get an import motor and go from there
Picked the new motor up from Turbo Toys yesterday morning, along with a 16 row oil cooler. Then headed off to Goldwagen to get a new cambelt, tensioner, rollers, oil filter, oil and whatnot. Spent the rest of the day with the family, so nothing done to the car.
This morning I first got busy taking the 8v motor out. Decided to take the head off during the process.
Now it takes a really well trained eye to see exactly why this engine stopped working
Piston for sale. Low mileage. Bargain [emoji1]
Got the motor out, and started prepping the 16v. First got the a/c pump, p/s pump, starter and alternator off. Then took off the flywheel and timimg belt cover. Pulled the pressure washer out and gave it a proper wash. Roundabout that time the rain showed up, so I moved everything back in the garage. Took off the tappet cover and gave it a drop of paint, and called it a day.
Next to do is fitting the new crank seals and a new tappet cover gasget. Can't do anything else or I void the 30 day warranty on the motor. Want to try get the motor in the bay during this week, so I can concentrate on doing whatever needs to be done to get the motor running next weekend. This includes (but is not limited to [emoji12] ) wiring the tps (5 wires on this one vs 3 on the old one), making the Corsa fuel rail fit ( No tank return on the 16v rail), see if the Dicktator can operate the mcgodie in the intake manifold that varies the intake runner length, make the Corsa coilpack fit... The list goes on...
Feels good to work on it again [emoji106]

Re: Old man's gonna go racing
Small update
Got the 16v motor ready to go in. New main seals are in, cambelt, rollers, tensioner etc done. Added an adjustable fuel pressure regulator after having modified the fuel rail so I have a return to the tank, Corsa coil pack mounted (looks lekker there if I say so myself). Got a set of plugleads for a C20XE, as the Corsa leads are a bit long and makes it look really messy. Can hopefully get it in the engine bay this afternoon. Will see how things go with work

Re: Old man's gonna go racing
Got a bit done today. Fitted the new oil pump, water pump, cambelt, rollers etc.
Once that was done, I set about getting the motor in the bay - mission accomplished. Tomorrow I'll set about getting the alternator in there, then get busy with the wiring and plumbing. Looks like the exhaust is going to catch on the front anti-roll bar... Will still see about sorting that - might just ditch the anti-roll bar completely haha
Anyway - pics...
Motor in!
Blanking plate I made to replace the EGR or whatever it's called
Fuel pressure regulator in place so that I have a return to the tank
Tomorrow we carry on...

Re: Old man's gonna go racing
No major updates for today. Managed to find the hoses I need to sort the cooling system out. Did a fair bit of wiring. Alternator in with the bracket modified so I can tension the belt properly. Fitted the branch. Fwiw - the quality on Cowley branches has gone down the tubes...
Anyways, tomorrow I still need to connect the alty and starter, fuel lines, couple of other bits and bobs. Need to go get a piece of vaccuum hose for the Dicktator - was running tps with the 8v. Also need to get a serial/usb cable so I can upload a map for the 16v running MAP.
Bit of luck I may just start it tomorrow...

Re: Old man's gonna go racing
It's alive!!! Again lol
Finished all the plumbing and wiring, loaded a different map, started first time. Motor sounds excellent. The map is quite a bit off for my motor though, but at least it starts.
Carrying on with other stuffs in the meantime
Tomorrow nothing gets done being Christmas, Friday I'll carry on with more, and the weekend will see some major things happening... You may want to check in on this thread come Monday...

Re: Old man's gonna go racing
Busy day today, but not too much done on the car actually lol
Spent most of the day sorting out the garage. Things were getting kinda out of hand haha. Anyways, garage is now all organized again. Everything ready for tomorrow - got a friend coming to help tomorrow too.
As mentioned earlier, not that much done on the car itself, apart from fitting the oil catch can and new accelerator cable. Removed the seats again, as I'm not happy with how they are positioned - sitting too high. Still have to figure out how I'm going to fit the driver's seat with them fancy brackets I bought from ATS. Need to find someone who is real good at welding and working with steel to help me out with that - I can't weld to save my butt.
Anyways - a pic or 2
Oil catch can in, must still straighten it
The car as it stands tonight
For the first time in a while I am actually genuinely excited about this project again...

What motor is in it now? What's the power difference like?
It's great work mate have you set a deadline for the finish

If it doesn't fit,
force it,
If it breaks,
It needed replacing anyway
