the red (or possibly otherwise coloured) sparkplug cover. unless you mean the proper redtop i.e. a CA18DET or a SE20...
but if you mean the vauxhall c20xe..then you want to be listening for the usual ill noises. also, check the fitting kit and the gear linkage. check they've been done propper, else you will have problems. and then of course the rest is just normal stuff. rust, leakage and gearbox.

if the engine does not look factory fitted walk away.
any random wires, pipes, etc it may have been bodged, ask what fitting kit was used to install it.
or if they modyfyd the original mounts

Yeah take the side cover off an check the cambelt its only 3 bolts look for eny oil leaks ect sump is a comon problem on them so can let that slide as it only cheap to replace.check engine mouts are the correct ones and not moddifide ones, make sure it has uprated brakes an shocks, they do tend to rattle for a couple of secs when they first start up but then there should be no funny noises lol and most important thing make sure the chassis has been strenthend in all the right places an check the gearlinkage and gearbox mounting if it slipps now again in 2nd n forth they could of not removed the lips off the mounting or botched the linkage ect check all the wiring and drive shafts then its just the ushall checks for buying a car theres prob more but there the basics iv had to menny drinks to think good luck with buying the car mate.
