speedo inop-

Hi, 1stly i'm new to corsa's + vauxhalls and i havn't even bought it yet . but the car i'm getting tommorow . a corsa B 1.5merit diesel. the speedo is inop.
i've searched and it seems as though there a cable driven and electric ones, as i havn't got it yet i dont know which i will have. any ideas? for the above info?
2ndly how much are we lookin at for a cable?~
and how difficult to fit?
is there any modified ones ( not sporty but modified from the original equipment i.e improved)
and thats about all i can think of for now,
oh the clocks dont work either showing same as the mot cert 6months back

My spedo doesn't work either...
Mine's mechanical (corsa b), got a replacement cable. It cost £20, but it still doesnt work so I now have to get the sepedo sender unit that goes into the gearbox and maybe new clocks too

getting to the spedo sender unit off...it split into 2 peices and i had to fish it out of the gearbox sump...was the hardest bit, then it was just a case of tieing string around the cable and pulling it through the car and using that as a guide as where to send the replacement cable.
interesting bit tho was that the original cable was in 2 parts the replacement cable was a single lengh

if ur speedo has gone check if ur rear window heater works if not its just a fuse
i think its the 56k one
coz mine went aswell ahah

i think there is because you still need power to drive the motor id just check saves u money then
it should just b a 10 amp fuse (red ones)

i've just checked the fuses, they all look ok. tho just above the fuses there are some empty spaces where the square ones go. Could thst mske sny difference?

if your speedo has a cable there will be no fuse as it runs off the speedo generator in the gearbox which inturn runs off the gearbox,
i'll just update you ,.
fitted a cable the other day piece o piss to do - snapped within 6miles
got some clocks + a replacement speedo snapped within 3 miles.
so i've got a refund on the cable
(it was a cheap re-production one)
so i'm going to pop down to vox and see what they say.
can the speedo generator be changed?

so how does the sender come off i struggled like hell to get my arm down and the cable in so i didn't have to take any bits off for access.
i'm sure i'll manage its just i h8 going into jobs blind

the sender has a lip with a 10mm bolt to hold it on to the gearbox, out of the sender comes the spedo - its screwed to the sender and mine was very tight to unscrew. from there its just routing through untill you come across the rubber gromet which seperates the engine bay and the cabin (which is very tight on) and then up behind the foot-well and steering coloum to the back of the dash.
The problem with the replacement cables are that they have a large metal peice which replaces the small screw cap on the original cables. If you route it the same way as the original it snaps, as it forces the cable into an acute angle and it just chews up inside (I got 20m out the last one). Apparently so I've been advised you have to change the route and effectivley try to bring it down over the top of the engine which should reduce the angle into the sender unit and hopefully that should stop it snapping....
...or atleast thats the theory I'll let you know after tommrow when i fit yet another one
