theres a fuse in the back of most headunits?
are you blowing fuses or is it just not working?

if its blowing fuses its a short, try:
checking resistance from the headunit cable to the fuse (without the headunit connected), and from the other side of the fuse to the battery? resistance should be low... (same as the leads put together) 0.4ohms something like that, if higher theres a short

if just not working its probs a bad earth

may sound simple but is the fuse in the hu in the right position? i know that in mine (jvc) it had to be moved to get it to work properly
