C20let, you can pick them up on ebay from £500 right up to £1500 for a good spec lump. The fooking fly!! Ive got a standard XE corsa, that dont hang about!! But would love to throw some carbs or throttle bodies perhaps a touch of NOS?? XE engine approx £500 for a good one, cavalier/astra driveshafts and hubs (which can be machined down to fit the corsa bearing, saves cost) good welder, motorsport kit, (again can be made to keep costs down) and your basicly there. You wont be dissapointed!!

Depends what you want it for, either 1/4 mile straight line speed and fun but poo handling round bends or fast on the twisty roads.
If you want straight line speed (these options will affect the handling greatly, understeer city)
C20LET/C20xe/X20XE (16v)
Not so much heavy but wouldnt affect handling as much and still got plenty of poke
C20NE/C20SEH/C20SE (8v)
Or for some great fun round the twisty roads and if done right can be great on a 1/4mile too
C16xe/X16XE/X18XE1/C16SE (great little n/a weapons if tuned right)
All of these conversions would be useless if the brakes and suspension were not upgraded, you cant have power without having brakes and suspension to handle.
The X18XE1 is getting very popular and is a good conversion and from what iv read of opinions with the torque band can surely give a redtop a good go, but if looking for the X18XE1 make sure you get the XE1 due to it been the small block lump, more power and torque than the big block X18xe

Have to disagre about affecting the handling. Mine sat on -40mm spring + shocks to suit with an XE in and it handles like a go cart. The only one problem i find is torque steer in the wet.

There are a number of engines it personal prefferance really. I would go X16XE because thats the engine i have and it very fast running more than 2.0ltr power.

Well, the XE is a heavy lump, but if you get uprated springs and set the car up to suit, the handling problems can be sorted.
You get 150ish bhp from them standard and you can easily pull 200+ after some mods. However, it leaves you with no room in the engine bay...and with my old x14 bein a bastard to work on, i cant imagine what an XE is like!
Thats the great thing about my SEH, i can get at everything from the top...meaning its easy to fix...and im not put off if something goes wrong.
The x16xe is also a great engine...and highly tunable! Plus, it is meant to be in the front of the car, so you dont get the mount and driveshaft problems that often follow 2.0 conversions.
Even the e16 (1.6 8v) is a good engine, and prime candidate for carbs! ... and if you drive it right, can be quicker than a badly driven or poorly maintained XE corsa!
