hi, i really want one of those fibreglass set ups on my doors with 3 speakers of different sizes sticking out the door. can you buy the door cards pre-made, or do you have to get a pro to do it? how much does it cost for that?

the larger speaker pods are relatively easy to build urself. Just take out the door cards and trays and decide where u wanna mount the speakers then mark out the positions. Make holes and use either medium plastic bucket bottoms cut off or wooden mdf mounts then screw them into place. Use some kind of cotton material or sumin stretchy like tights/latex to pull over the areas where u mounted the plastic/wooden mounts. Staple the material so that u get the desired curves etc with the material pulled tight. Then use epoxy resin and hardner straight onto the material and let it set to get a basic hardened shell. U can now remove from the door card once dried and set and continue to apply layers of fibreglass tissue and expoxy resin and hardner then sand down to ur desired finish. Or if u dont need/want the shells to be reinforced with firbeglass tissue u can just keep addin layers of epoxy resin and hardner to get a pretty hard shell and it so much easier to sand down to a smooth shiny finish, but it not quite as strong...i.e. if u kick it by mistake pretty hard it may be prone to collapsing a bit.
I've been contemplating sumin similar but wont be doin it for a while if i do go ahead with it. Cept i saw thinkin bout reupholstering it at the same time with some kind of black and green material combo.

wicked! thanks. sounds like a lot of work though. would be so much easier to find them pre-made. might leave it for a summer project. yeah when i do it i'm getting white/green leather combo. or just white leather but with green speakers. my car is resprayed green and i'm upholstering the whole interior in white leather so it should go quite well!

u can get white/green leatherette reclining bucket seats from ebay, they would prob go pretty good in ur car. I've found some premade front door cards but they are for 2000-2006 corsas, and they basically standard but with an extra door speaker mounting pod. They boring OEM grey/black vinyl and cotton aswell, plus they goin being sold for like £260 per pair.

i think mags shud start featuring more cars that are done on very very low budgets lol..cz most of the time there alot more interesting and individual..anyone with poo of money can just slap loads of expensive stuff in..but people like us that have gotta take our time with buyin stuff coz of wot we can afford have different cars as we just make do with the cheaper stuff but still want it to look good so put extra effort in..hope that makes sense lol
