I just rung direct line to get a quote on how much my premium would change if i put alloys on my car, and they said they will not insure anyone under the age of 25 if their car has any modifications whatsoever!

standard for direct line. I will have to get my old dears to declare all the mods i done otherwise they start actin up cos im just a named driver on the policy who under 25. U wanna try Adrian Flux if u want ur own policy, i hear they are quite good younger drivers of car with anykind of mods. Or u could try that skyinsurance that givin us a club discount if u join em. Theres a post with details on it, but again i think u gotta be ova 21 or sumin.

I paid for my car but it's registered in my dad's name, it's his policy and I'm a named driver.
I'm with quinn direct, I'm paying £38 a month for my insurance.
That's £456 a year.
Quinn are pretty cheap, even without having your dad as the policy holder

Over 19 with 2 years driving experience is our very minimum criteria.
Sky Insurance are about as modification friendly as it gets, we insure some very big BHP cars, or we insure cars with just alloys.
We also cover modifciations on a 'like for like' basis.

I've been driving since May 2007, as a provisional driver and January 2008 as a full license holder.
Of coarse I havn't declared any mods
I don't think Quinn Direct really care unless you've made some serious engine changes.
all I've got is an air filter, hardly worth declaring to bump my insurance.
Can't afford it now as it is.

well if you total the car and make a claim for the value of it they may say ur insurance is voided cos u didnt declare the changes. but i guess if u dont crash u should be ok. Just hope u dont have to make a claim on ur insurance and u will be fine. If someone else hits u and it goes to thier insurance it doesnt matter, they have to pay out.

It's when he mows down a pedestrian, the police immediately impound the vehicle, insurance assessor/investigator sees non standard (and non declared parts) and refuse to pay out.. that is when he will have
major problems.
To be honest I get fed up of reading about non declared modifications on club forums.. and it seems to be a running theme on the various Corsa clubs I work with.
There really is NO excuse. There are so many modification friendly insurance companies out there who dont really punish you for having mods on your cars, I really cannot see why people dont declare.
If you have a modified car, you need to speak to an insurance specialist.

I have an air filter, a sound system and some leather seats. It's not worth declaring.
If I had any major modifications, I'd declare them, but there is no point. My sound system, if it's stolen, it's my stupid fault for not declaring, calibra seats...barely cost me anything, air filter..no performance advantage on a 1.2 8v engine whatsoever, just a nicer sound.
Anyway, it's my choice & risk to take and please don't take offense, but I don't want to be lectured about it. There are plenty of people here with redtop's under the bonnet and 1.4 on the logbook.
At least I have insurance, there are 1.5 million drivers on the road in the UK without it.

Its obviously up to you.. but I dont want other members reading what you are (illegally) doing and then following your example. To be honest I dont think club admin would encourage it either. I'll repeat, ANY aftermarket change you make to your vehicle, you need to let the insurance company know. It doesn't matter if it's an air filter or a cally turbo conversion. If you crash and and investigator finds undeclared mods on your car then your insurance claim will be void.. this may cost you a few quid to sort out, if you (god forbit) injure someone then it may costs you thousands to sort out.
Whilst I've got you, may I also point out that the way you have worded your first post above reads that your faather is insuring YOUR vehicle in his name, with you as a named driver.. that is also illegal and is called 'fronting' .
If you wish to drive without valid insurance, then go for it fella. The police are getting more and more wise to this sort of thing, so are insurers.

yes indeed you are. Declare any change to the vehicle. Pick the right sort of insurance company and they would not charge for cosmetic modifications.

I would absolutely not reccommend anybody to follow my example.
I'd love to have my own policy and build up a no-claims bonus and declare all my modifications to be safe but while insurance prices are taking the piss out of us, I really can't afford to, especially with no job. I would have no car because I can barely afford to run it now.
Why do insurance companies care at all if you paint your dash then? Why does that have to be declared?
So, when I bought a bigger sized battery to replace the tiny corsa one, I should declare it, why? I don't see any logic or reasoning behind it. Obviously it's the law, but why do you have to declare changes when you...replace a gaitor or something?

I would guess, yes.
Even the debadging, as weird as it sounds, they probably have some thing that says you must declare it.
It's weird because..using that as an example.
Most people know for a car to be legal it has to have one side mirror (not two).
So, if a kid was to kick off a mirror and you not declare this to your insurance, they could not pay up in a claim.
lol, I figure that's true because that's what it sounds like
