Clock display not working

Hi, new here so sorry if a similar question has been asked previously I've had a quick look around and couldn't find anything.
I bought a 1994 corsa LS a couple of months ago as my first car and during the time since have gradually been fixing a few things inside (fitting a new stereo, replacing interior bulbs etc) but I'm having a bit of trouble with the clock/temperature display in the centre. The problem basically is that it doesn't work. I managed to remove the unit from the car and when I took the casing off the two bulbs were black as though they had both blown. I purchased two new bulbs, fitted these into the unit and put it all back together but it still doesn't work.
I've heard a few stories of clock displays that only seem to work when the radio/lights are on but these things don't seem to make any difference.
My feeling now is that the clock unit's had it and I should just get a new one from either a scrapyard or ebay but just wondered if anyone could suggest anything else that I could check (i don't know if there are any fuses etc for the clock that might have blown) before I go out and get a new one?
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks, Matt
