Nasty Dragging sound

this afternoon while out and about i heard a nasty dragging sound coming from my car. It only happens when i accelerate in the lower gears. If was fine at 1st but then i picked up my mate and noticed it. There is nothing visible (that i can see) hanging off anywhere. Does anyone have any ideas of what it could be?

could be the rear brake drums..might be worth checking.

i sort of half hope it is because i recently had them replaced and ill be able to get it done under warrantee but ive already taken it back to have work done on the new brakes. Kwik fit are becoming a bit of a joke, this will be the 3rd time in 4 months that ive taken it to them to look at my brakes.

got all the brakes checked out today and the bloke at kwik fit said there is nothing wrong. When i went in i said it made a grinding sound when i accelerated, and he said he take a drive in it and have a look. When i picked it up he said, he couldn't hear anything so he put it up on the ramp took all the brakes apart, gave them all a clean and put them back on and then drove it again. But on the way home i could feel the difference in the brakes, they are alot sharper and the handbrake doesn't come up as far, and the dragging sound isn't there anymore, so he's done something to it even if its a little tweek here and there. Although there is a slight rattle occasionally but ill get my dad to have a look at that when he gets backs.
it didn't cost me anything so im not going to complain.

It could have been a bit of debris stuck in the axel or bit of crap stuck in the break pads...

The rear shoes were more than likely binding up as the kwik fitter had proberly over adjusted them. Therefore it sounds like he has cleaned and deadjusted the shoes so they don't bind and your then nor dragging the arse end of the car down the road.

ye , well brakes are fine now but there its still making the same noise, not as bad and not as often or for as long. Im taknig it down to my grandma's (she has a pit in her garage floor) and me and a mate are going to have a look see if we can see anything. Its really getting to me now though, even though it isn't as bad and kwik fit didn't seem to notice it, i know its still there.

The shoes might still be a bit tight mate. Its horrible whe you no that there is something not right with your car and when you take it to somene and they say they have fixed it but you no its still there, I'm a mechanic so im lucky and dont have to take my car to anyone I just do it myself.

ye it is, couldn't see anything yesterday. My dad works for Jag but he's working abroad untill the 23rd. Is there a simple way to loosen the shoes? (sorry im not much of a mechanic).

Yeah you will need to get the rear wheels off and find the tensioning mechanism inside the drum usually there is a little hole in the drum and the the mechanism is at the top. If you cant see the mechanism through the hole then you will need to turn the drum around till you can see it, you will then need a screwdriver to loosen the shoes off. Try and get both sides equal so that the braking balance is ok, you dont want one side to be tight after one notch on the handbrake and the other side to be spining still. Hopes this helps mate.

thanks mate but after today i doubt its the brakes. i listen for it all the way home from work but i can't tell exactly where the noise is coming from but it now seems to happen when i take my foot off the accelerater. Its difficult to explain but it seems to be getting better (meaning doesn't last very long or happen as often) but i guess that could only mean two things... its sorting itself out or its about to pop is klogs

found out the problem what the problem was. My cat converter had pretty much disintergrated and the rubbish from it had gone through the rest of the system...so a new exhaust system for me. Had the front section fitted last week, getting the rest of it done tomorrow (couldn't afford to do it all at once).
...and then back to the garage next week for new tyres
money money money
