Where can i find...??

hey,

Just recently i have been having problems when idling. sometimes its to fast, even upto 3k rpm. othertimes it pulses.

from reading other threads it has become apparent that either the idle control valve has packed up or the throttle position sensor has packed up.

where exactly are they?? i have x16xe engine. i guess ICV is on throttle body but i cant see too well. do i need to take the manifold off the top?

any help much appreciated!! my car is poorly again!!!

thanks

your right to assume the idle control motor as thats the most likely cause. Do you have a Haynes manual you should get one they are very good.

I have an 8v so everything is easily accessible but from what ive just read in the manual on the 16v its a bit of a pain to access.

the idle control motor and the throttle position sensor are on the throttle body which is under the inlet manifold on the right hand side of the engine looking at it from the front of the car.

to access the idle control motor easiest way is to remove the coolant expansion tank and you can reach in to get at it. to access the throttle position sensor you have to remove the throttle body and to do this you need to remove the top half of the inlet manifold.

you should definately have a manual if you going to do this, it is more likely to be the idle control motor and as this is the easier to clean/replace I would try this first.

ok thankyou very much.
i will have a go tomorow, i will try and get part numbers. i think im just gonna replace them.
garage thaught the alternator overvolting was causing the problem.
replaced it anyway but not sure it was necessary since the problem is worse than ever.

thanks again :)

tried to get at idle control valve, very tight space to work in and couldnt actually remove it so just pulled it back and gave it a good blast with carb cleaner.
definately better now. still fluctuates a little bit.
think i will replace it still though, as it kinda proved thats the problem.
thanks for your help finding it.

:D

was lookin forward to a day at santa pod tomorow :(

thanks for any help

What engine have you got?

On the 1.0 12v the crankshaft sensor is at the rear of the engine near the bottom, easiest access is by jacking the car up and crawling underneath, £30-40 from vaux for the part. Access isn't brilliant but I couldn't be bothered removing bits from the engine bay to reach it from above.

Odd that both sensors failed at the same time though?

Its most likely that only one of the sensors has failed and the ECU has gotten confused because the signals from oe sensor doesn't match the other.

sometimes the crackshaft sensor had become dirty or can be knocked out of place, I would check this first.

my engine is the x16xe, im dissapointed cus its very low mileage. its becoming a money pit to be honest.

so where to start??
il get it jacked up tomorow and try to get at the crank sensor. so you think take it off and give it a good clean and replace???
then just need to find the camshaft sensor ( presuming its towards the top of the engine, near the cams! )

i drove the car earlier only slowly though. and no light, no stalling.
but the revs were out of control. im hoping new idle control valve is gonna fix that all together. should arrive tuesday.

thanks for help!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Crankshaft & Camshaft for the 1.6 :)

I had somewhere I needed to be so couldn't risk a cleaning not being enough and just replaced my crankshaft sensor, the old one had some gunk/corrosion on the metal sensor end. As you might just have one bad sensor throwing off the other one I'd probably go for a clean first and see how it goes.
